As we embrace this era, the numbers speak volumes about the market’s potential and the immense investments fueling this transformation. By 2025, the global AI in healthcare market is projected to reach a staggering $45.2 billion, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 44.9% from 2020. This meteoric rise is a testament to the technology’s capability to revolutionize every facet of healthcare, from diagnostics to treatment protocols, drug development, and patient engagement. The pharmaceutical sector, in particular, is on the brink of a major overhaul with AI investments. AI in drug discovery alone is expected to save up to 40% in costs and reduce drug development times by 4 years. Companies are pouring resources into AI, recognizing its potential to streamline drug discovery processes, personalize treatment plans, and significantly enhance patient outcomes. At the forefront of this evolving landscape is Naresh Vurukonda. As a Principal Architect at Amgen, a globally recognized biotechnology company, Naresh plays a crucial role in advancing the application of biotechnology for developing new treatments. His work at Amgen, especially in developing AI-driven solutions for patient care and pharmaceutical processes, highlights the significant potential of AI in these fields. Naresh’s contributions at Amgen underscore the practical impact of AI in enhancing healthcare and pharmaceutical practices.

Bridging Technology and Medicine: The Shift to Healthcare AI

Naresh started his journey in the technology space as a software engineer at ValueLabs, which helped him learn the foundations of technology and gain real-time experience working with multiple clients. This experience enabled him to think out of the box and solve complex real-time problems using cutting-edge technologies. He then partnered up with a startup company and built a restaurant management application from the ground up. Naresh started looking at the technology space vividly from a different perspective and decided to pursue a master’s in computer science from Southern Arkansas University, which paved the way to mark his excellence in the technology space. During this span, he learned about the future of technology, specifically in Artificial Intelligence and data engineering, and how large volumes of data are being used for decision-making in various industries. Post completion of his master’s degree, Naresh started his career with Viacom Media Networks as a Data Engineer consultant where he learned data utilization through Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering to make informed decisions in streaming applications. After spending a couple of years, Naresh decided to serve a bigger purpose and make a profound impact on people’s lives through his skill set and experience. He started his journey in the healthcare space as a Data Engineer consultant at Amgen to serve patients where technology can improve patient life. Naresh designed and developed data engineering pipelines for medical representative data to fuel downstream applications, which in turn improved drug accessibility for patients through various applications. Within a few months, he gained significant knowledge of the commercial sales domain and proposed technology changes using AI, which uplifted sales applications and reduced a considerable portion of the budget. After a certain time period, he became an integral part of Amgen and quickly rose to the Principal Architect position by successfully rolling out Artificial Intelligence solutions in commercial sales and marketing from the ground up. His work is not only limited to solving complex problems, but also scaling to multiple brands and increasing brand revenue. His work is well recognized in impacting patient life through Artificial Intelligence solutions and he has also received Amgen Spirit Awards multiple times for value addition in the commercial space and creating an impact on patient life.

Revolutionizing Patient Care through AI: Naresh’s Innovations at Amgen

Naresh designed and developed the Representative Artificial Intelligence (RepAI) product, which predicts dynamic health care providers for medical representatives in the field of cardiology and internal medicine using predictive AI models and feature engineering. This algorithm reaches out to new and existing patients in cardiology for drug usage, eventually leading to an improvement in the quality of patient life. The RepAI product is directly supporting approximately 1 million patients through field representatives. Naresh also designed and developed the Omnichannel product to create personalized recommendations and alerts (Next best action) for HCP through AI (deep learning) models by configuring various data points such as Amgen product sales, patient claims, representative call activity, and HCP actions on vendors’ and Amgen’s websites. This helps to target HCPs who engage with new and existing patients to prescribe Amgen products, which in turn improves various conditions of patients. These AI models have helped reach millions of patients across different brands, improving their well-being, and have been a success factor for Amgen.

AI-Driven Solutions: Improved Healthcare Outcomes

Drug accessibility is a major problem in the healthcare and life science space, either due to a lack of awareness or affordability within the spectrum of patients. To solve this problem, we laid out an omnichannel strategy to create personalized recommendations for healthcare providers through various channels such as in-person calls, emails, banner ads, and social media platforms. This process is achieved by building deep learning models, which analyze various datasets of patients and healthcare providers, generating next best action specific to healthcare providers at regular cadence. This process helps to educate healthcare providers about drug importance and specificity, which in turn becomes accessible to patients and improves their therapies. We noticed huge success with one brand by implementing an AI solution with an omnichannel approach and also saw product revenue uplift by 2-3% of total brand revenue. Now, we are rolling out AI models to other Amgen brands as well to serve as many patients as possible.

Guiding the Next Generation: Mentorship and Team Building

Naresh always believed a strong foundation in technology and domain expertise would lead to stronger product teams within an organization, helping to develop best-in-class products to support more approachable patient care. In addition, transparency and motivating the team with constant recognition will enlighten the mindset of engineers. This helps engineers to go the extra mile while developing solutions, also benefiting their career growth and mindset shift to pave the next steps in their career. As a Principal Architect in Amgen’s commercial space, he shared his expertise on cutting-edge technologies such as Data Engineering and Machine Learning (AI) by mentoring Associate Data Engineers and Sr Associate Engineers in the Sales & Marketing domain. This led to solving complex problems more efficiently through a scalable approach and also helped to develop the best talent and quality products, which supported patients. Mentoring fellow engineers helped to scale the product team to support more brands and work independently from capturing business requirements to implementing technical components. This showed the business value of healthcare providers in prescribing the products to patients through Artificial Intelligence solutions, which in turn enriched the quality of patient life. In addition, engineers helped to uplift Amgen brand revenue across multiple products. On the other hand, this helped to build a stronger data engineer and machine learning team in building AI solutions to better patient life through different channels and applications.
