Simple Website and LinkedIn Changes to Increase Engagement

With every business having a website and every individual having a Linkedin page, often a few small adjustments can make it easier for visitors and potential customers to interact with your business.

In a competitive market, some simple tweaks can be very effective to get a few more enquiries, sales and customers through the door.

The goal is simple: remove barriers, provide useful information and make it obvious what someone should do next. We offer some top tips to help you increase engagement.

Make contacting you straightforward

One of the easiest things to improve is how people contact you. Check that your email address and telephone number are clearly displayed and easy to find.

You should also have a straightforward contact form, particularly on important pages such as your homepage and contact page.

If someone is interested in your services, do not make them search for a way to get in touch. Every additional step gives them another chance to abandon the process.

Keep forms short and only request information you actually need. Research from 2026 found that forms containing three fields achieved a median conversion rate of 23.1%, compared with just 6.9% for forms containing ten or more fields.

You can always collect additional information once you have started a conversation.

Offer something worth downloading

People are more likely to provide their email address when they receive something useful in return.

Consider creating a downloadable guide, ebook, report, checklist or industry briefing that addresses a common problem faced by your target audience.

Instead of asking visitors simply to “subscribe to our newsletter”, give them a clear reason to hand over their details.

A useful resource can provide immediate value to the visitor while also giving your business an opportunity to continue the relationship through email marketing.

Consider pop-ups and website toolbars

Pop-ups have a reputation for being intrusive, but they can be useful when they appear at the right time and offer something relevant.

You could use one to promote a downloadable guide, encourage newsletter sign-ups, highlight a service or promote an important announcement. Avoid displaying one immediately after someone arrives on the site, as they may not yet know enough about your business.

Another option is a website toolbar positioned along the top or bottom of the screen from the likes of Hustle or Barra. This can keep important links, offers or contact options visible without dominating the page.

The purpose should be to make useful options easier to find, rather than adding more distractions.

Create urgency with countdowns

Countdown clocks can encourage people to take action when there is a genuine deadline.

For example, if a special price expires at the end of the week or an event closes for registration at a specific time, showing the remaining time can give visitors an extra reason to act now.

However, urgency needs to be genuine. A countdown that restarts every time someone visits a page can quickly undermine credibility.

Scarcity is most effective when customers understand what is limited, when the opportunity ends and why they need to act.

Make limited offers believable

Limited availability can also encourage conversions when there is a genuine reason behind it.

You could advertise a set number of consultation appointments, a limited number of event places or a discount that expires on a specific date.

Be transparent about the restriction. Saying “Five consultation appointments available this month” is likely to feel more credible than using vague phrases such as “Hurry – limited time only”.

The broader principle is to create a clear reason to take action without putting unnecessary pressure on potential customers.

In eCommerce, it is common to include how many items are in stock, whilst also giving the option to make bulk discounts, as demonstrated by the Fireball Workwear’s website – something that they have said has been a ‘gamechanger’ for their business.

Improve your LinkedIn profile

Small changes to your LinkedIn profile can make a difference too. If you are actively looking for a new role, make this clear. LinkedIn’s Open to Work feature allows you to signal to recruiters and other members that you are interested in new opportunities, with options for controlling who can see the information.

It is also better to be specific about what you are looking for. Instead of saying you are “open to anything”, explain the types of roles, industries or opportunities that interest you.

Your profile should also demonstrate your experience. Include examples of your work, share useful industry knowledge, and clearly explain what you do and the value you provide.

Focus on small improvements

Increasing engagement does not always require a major marketing campaign or expensive website project.

Start by making your contact information more visible, simplifying forms and giving visitors a worthwhile reason to share their email address. Use pop-ups and toolbars selectively, and consider countdowns or limited offers when there is a genuine reason for urgency.

On LinkedIn, make your availability, experience and expertise clear.

There is no single change that guarantees higher engagement or conversion rates. The best approach is to make one improvement at a time, monitor the results and use the data to decide what to change next.
