Why Grigor Ter-Ghazaryan’s GTB Steel Ended Up in Ararat Instead of Yeraskh

The reinforcing bar plant was first planned near the border. Security risks forced a reset, and the operation moved to Ararat.

YEREVAN, Armenia – Where a factory stands shapes nearly everything about it, from who works there to how raw materials arrive and finished product leaves. For GTB Steel, that question had to be answered twice.

The reinforcing bar producer, part of Grigor Ter-Ghazaryan’s GTB Holdings, was originally planned for Yeraskh, a location near the border. Security risks there forced the company to reset the project and move the operation to Ararat, where the plant is now based.

Relocating an industrial project before it is up and running is not a small adjustment. Plans, site work and timelines built around one location have to be redone for another, and companies usually avoid that unless staying put looks worse. Here the risk picture left little room for debate, so the project moved.

The plant that exists today produces A500C reinforcing bar, the steel rods set into concrete to give it tensile strength. Company materials put its annual capacity at about 112,800 tons, with a goal of reaching 225,600 tons within three years. The plant and related companies employ more than 1,000 people, according to the same materials.

The business case did not change with the move. Armenia has long relied on imported rebar for construction. A domestic producer does not remove that dependence entirely, but it can reduce the need for finished imports and give the country more control over one of the most basic materials in any building project.

For Ararat, the decision brought a sizable industrial operation to the area. For the group, it anchored the steel side of a business that also covers construction, real estate development and cultural projects. A Yahoo Finance profile of GTB Holdings describes GTB Steel as one of the clearest examples of the group’s industrial strategy.

Plans for heavy industry near a border carry risks that plans elsewhere do not. GTB Steel’s answer was to change the site rather than drop the project.
