Every raid tier gets one sentence that sticks. For Midnight Season 2, it is this: beneath the Coiled Isle, in the Vaults of Atal’Utek, something has been sealed away for more than sixteen thousand years, and Patch 12.1 is the patch where it stops being sealed.
The Venomous Abyss opens on 18 August 2026 (19th in Europe) as the centrepiece of Midnight Season 2, one week after Patch 12.1 Curse of Ula’tek went live. Here is what the raid actually contains and how to approach it.
The raid at a glance
| Detail | Value |
| Location | Vaults of Atal’Utek, beneath the Coiled Isle |
| Bosses | 8, across four wings |
| Group size | 25 |
| Difficulties | Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, Mythic, plus Story Mode |
| Raid Finder entry requirement | Item level 273 |
| Final boss | Ula’tek |
The boss list
The eight encounters are grouped into four wings, which also determines the Raid Finder unlock order:
| Wing | Bosses |
| The Soulcoilers | Nek’zali the Soulcoiler, The Twin Fangs |
| The Essence of Venom | Entombed Sentinels, Vashnik the Malignant |
| The Serpent Warren | The Lost Explorers, Sszorak |
| The Tomb of Ula’tek | The Coiled Altar, Ula’tek |
Ula’tek closes the tier — an ancient Amani weapon of hatred, corruption and venom, sealed beneath the isle since long before anyone currently alive in Azeroth could have witnessed it.
The unlock schedule
| Date (NA / EU) | Opens |
| 18 / 19 Aug 2026 | Normal, Heroic and Mythic — all eight bosses |
| 25 / 26 Aug 2026 | Story Mode and Raid Finder Wing 1 |
| 1 / 2 Sep 2026 | Raid Finder Wing 2 |
| 8 / 9 Sep 2026 | Raid Finder Wings 3 and 4 |
Organised difficulties open everything at once; Raid Finder trickles out over four weeks. If you intend to raid seriously, your season starts on the 18th. If you are here for the story, it starts on the 25th and finishes in September.
Loot and item levels
| Difficulty | Item level range |
| Raid Finder | 279 – 289 |
| Normal | 292 – 302 |
| Heroic | 305 – 315 |
| Mythic | 318 – 344 |
Two Season 2 changes make this table more generous than it looks. The season’s overall item level jump is 46 levels over Season 1, up from Season 1’s 39. And Heroic Great Vault rewards now start on the Myth track at roughly item level 318, meaning a weekly Heroic clear remains worth doing for the entire season instead of going stale after a month.
How to be ready by the 18th
There is one week between the patch and the raid, and it is enough. A realistic preparation path:
- Clear the entry bar.Item level 273 is the Raid Finder requirement and a sensible floor for Normal. Mythic 0 Altar of Fangs, Delves and world content on the Coiled Isle will get you there.
- Run the new Lair. The Tidebound Grotto opened on World difficulty during patch week with Nymrissa Wavecaller as its single boss — it is drop-in friendly and gives entry-level Season 2 gear around item level 279.
- Do the campaign. The Coiled Isle campaign feeds gear, currency and reputation, and it is the cheapest item level in the patch.
- Sort professions early.Enchants and gems for a full set are a significant gold expense; buy reagents before the season-opening price spike.
- Confirm your raid slot.Guilds finalise rosters in the days before an opening. Silence in week zero becomes a bench seat in week one.
What kind of raid is it?
Eight bosses is a compact tier by modern standards — long enough to sustain a season, short enough that a Heroic clear becomes a single-night affair by around week six. The structure follows the familiar shape:
- Bosses 1–3fall quickly, often in the first week on Heroic. These are the alt-gearing and trial-recruit encounters.
- Bosses 4–6are where most guilds spend weeks three to five. Progress slows and rosters get tested.
- Bosses 7–8are the tier. The Coiled Altar and Ula’tek define how the season is remembered.
Where the difficulty sits for each audience
| Audience | Realistic target | Timeframe |
| Solo / casual | Raid Finder, all four wings | Late September |
| Casual group | Normal full clear | Weeks 1–3 |
| Committed raider | Heroic full clear | Weeks 4–7 |
| Guild raider | Mythic progression | Whole season |
Where help gets sought, and for what
The tier’s difficulty curve produces a predictable pattern. Very few people need help with the first three bosses. A great many stall on the back half of Heroic in weeks three to five, precisely when pug availability drops off. And essentially nobody bridges the gap to Mythic without a guild.
That middle band is where a venomous abyss boost tends to be aimed: a Heroic clear for someone whose roster fell apart, an alt that needs gearing before a raid slot opens, or a specific boss standing between a player and a mount. The constraint being solved is almost always availability of twenty-five coordinated people rather than the encounters themselves.
Where it does not apply is Mythic. Mythic Venomous Abyss is a fixed twenty-player format with mechanics that kill the individual who misses them, and no arrangement changes that.
The takeaway
The Venomous Abyss is a well-structured eight-boss tier in a new zone with a generous gearing curve and a Heroic difficulty that stays relevant all season. It opens on 18 August with everything unlocked at once for organised groups, and drips out through Raid Finder for everyone else across the following month.
Get to item level 273 this week, clear Normal to learn the fights, and treat Heroic as the season’s real destination. Ula’tek has waited sixteen thousand years; the tier will still be there in October.
