Health Tech growth is being driven by a UX-first approach, as companies prioritise clear, user-centred design to improve adoption, usability and outcomes.
Health Tech companies are increasingly prioritising user experience and product clarity as core drivers of success, according to James Hanson, founder of Layers Studio, a digital product design and development agency.
Hanson says the studio’s UX-led approach has been a key factor in securing a series of new Health Tech projects, as organisations in the sector shift towards more user-centred digital products and services.
“Health Tech is an area where complexity is unavoidable, but confusion is not,” said Hanson. “What we’ve found is that the companies making real progress are the ones investing early in UX thinking and treating it as a foundation rather than a final layer.”
Layers Studio works across UX design, product strategy, and development, helping organisations build and refine digital products, including mobile app design, brand design and website design services. The agency has seen growing demand from Health Tech clients looking to improve usability, streamline patient and clinician journeys, and create more intuitive digital systems.
Much of this demand is being driven by increasing pressure on Health Tech providers to deliver digital products that are not only functional, but also accessible and easy to navigate for a wide range of users, Hanson explains.
“We’re seeing a shift where good design is no longer a competitive advantage, it’s an expectation,” he added. “In Health Tech especially, if users can’t understand or trust a system quickly, they disengage. UX has a direct impact on adoption, retention, and ultimately outcomes.”
The agency’s approach combines strategic UX thinking with technical development, ensuring that design decisions are tightly aligned with engineering execution. This integrated model, Hanson explains, is helping clients reduce friction in product development and avoid costly rework later in the lifecycle.
“As a studio, we don’t treat UX and development as separate phases,” he said. “They inform each other from the beginning. That’s what allows us to move faster and build products that actually work in the real world, not just in theory.”
Layers Studio has recently expanded its work within Health Tech, supporting companies developing digital tools for healthcare professionals, patient platforms, and internal operational systems.
While the sector continues to evolve rapidly, Hanson believes the biggest opportunity lies in simplifying complexity rather than adding new features. “The most successful Health Tech products we see aren’t necessarily the most advanced in terms of features,” he said. “They’re the ones that reduce cognitive load, remove friction, and make critical workflows feel effortless.”
Looking ahead, Layers Studio plans to continue growing its presence in Health Tech, alongside its wider work in digital product design and development across multiple industries.
