Stocks and dividends
Profit on a share trade after costs and tax, dividend yield and income, reinvestment growth, intrinsic value by discounted cash flow, and whether a dividend is safe.
Individual shares reward attention to detail: dealing costs, purchase duty, the tax on gains and the way reinvested dividends compound. These calculators handle each piece so a trade or an income portfolio can be judged on what it actually returns.

Common questions
Stocks and dividends: the questions people ask
- How is profit on shares taxed?
- As a capital gain when you sell. The US uses long-term rates after 12 months; the UK charges 18% or 24% above a £3,000 exemption; Canada taxes half the gain as income; Australia halves gains held over a year. Inside an ISA, Roth IRA or TFSA there is no tax.
- What is dividend yield?
- Annual dividend per share divided by the share price. Yield on cost (dividend divided by what you paid) shows what a long-held position now pays you.
- What is a dividend payout ratio?
- Dividends as a share of earnings or free cash flow. Above 80% leaves little room for a bad year; the dividend safety calculator scores it with debt and coverage.
