About the Dividend Calculator

Estimate the yearly cash income from a share holding and the yield implied by the current share price. This helps an income investor understand how a stated dividend per share relates to the shares owned and to the current value of the position.

How it works and an example to tryShow less

How to use the result

Multiply the number of shares by the annual dividend per share to obtain annual income. Divide that dividend per share by the current share price to estimate yield, and display a monthly equivalent for comparison. The tool assumes an unchanged dividend in its longer view; payments can be cut or suspended, and tax is excluded.

Example to try

Enter 100 shares, a dividend of 1.20 per share and the current share price. First inspect the annual cash income, then change the share price without altering the dividend. Yield moves even though the cash paid per share has not changed.

    Who uses it, and when

Income investors comparing dividend shares, retirees estimating cash income from a portfolio, and anyone checking whether a headline yield is realistic against the dividend actually paid.

    Mistakes worth avoiding

    • Chasing a high yield that only looks high because the share price has collapsed.
    • Assuming last year's dividend will be paid again this year.
    • Forgetting dividend tax and the tax-free allowance in your country.
