How Much Does Oracle Want to Invest in Japan?

The computer technology corporation Oracle in Japan announced on Wednesday that it plans to invest more than $8 billion over the next 10 years to meet the growing demand for cloud computing and AI infrastructure in Japan. The investment will grow Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s (OCI) footprint across Japan. In addition, to help customers and partners address the digital sovereignty requirements in Japan, Oracle will significantly expand its operations and support engineering teams with Japan-based personnel.

Toshimitsu Misawa, member of the board, corporate executive officer, and president of Oracle Corporation Japan, said that they are giving their customers and partners the opportunity to innovate with AI and other cloud services.

“We are dedicated to meeting our customers and partners where they are in their cloud journey. By growing our cloud footprint and providing a team to support sovereign operations in Japan, we are giving our customers and partners the opportunity to innovate with AI and other cloud services while supporting their regulatory and sovereignty requirements,” said Misawa.

Oracle said that it plans to increase local customer support of its public cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka and its local operations teams for Oracle Alloy and OCI Dedicated Region. According to them, this will enable governments and businesses across Japan to continue to move their mission-critical workloads to the Oracle Cloud and embrace sovereign AI solutions.

What is cloud computing?

According to Oracle, cloud computing will permit users to rent instead of buy their IT. Instead of investing heavily in databases, software, and hardware, companies opt to access their compute power via the internet, or the cloud, and pay for it as they use it. The cloud services includes but are not limited to, servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and business intelligence.

There are three different types of clouds: public, private, and hybrid. Each type requires a different level of management from the customer and provides a different level of security. In a public cloud, the entire computing infrastructure is located on the premises of the cloud provider, and in a private cloud, it is used by one organization that can be hosted at the organization’s location or at the cloud provider’s data center. A hybrid cloud is a combination of both public and private clouds.

On April 4, 2024, Oracle announced it has partnered with Palantir to provide secure cloud and AI solutions, aiming to power businesses and governments around the world.

According to the report, part of the agreement is that Palantir will move Foundry workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Palantir will also make its Gotham and AI Platforms deployable across Oracle’s distributed cloud: in public cloud regions; Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Dedicated Regions; Oracle Alloy; Oracle EU Sovereign Cloud; Oracle Government Cloud; Oracle Roving Edge, and Oracle’s air-gapped regions for defense and intelligence customers. Oracle’s vast cloud footprint and sovereign AI capabilities will allow more organizations to use Palantir’s leading platforms for data integration and decision-making. Oracle and Palantir are proving there is no trade-off. Organizations can have the best cloud infrastructure, cloud applications, and AI while meeting the highest sovereignty and security standards.
