Flowing Space, East Village’s innovative art and cultural space, announces “Distorted Waves,” a solo exhibition by acclaimed graphic designer Yingxuan Dan(Eilis), running from July 18th to July 27th, 2025. The exhibition presents an immersive exploration of music visualization through design, featuring Dan’s London Design Award-winning work alongside her extensive portfolio of music-related projects.
At the heart of the exhibition stands “Interstellar Enigma – Egoism of Stars,” Dan’s Silver Award-winning project from the 2024 London Design Awards. Inspired by Daft Punk’s “Veridis Quo,” this piece masterfully combines outer space elements with futuristic aesthetics to explore themes of the unknown and purpose. The design uses black as its primary palette with blue accents, creating a serene yet mysterious atmosphere that echoes the track’s contemplative nature.
Dan’s educational journey at Boston University, where she earned her Master’s degree in Graphic Design in 2023, laid the foundation for her innovative approach to music visualization. Throughout her career, she has maintained strong connections with the music industry, notably through her long-term collaboration with New York’s experimental music label Byebyetechno. This partnership has resulted in numerous album covers and promotional materials that bridge the gap between experimental music and visual communication.
The exhibition showcases Dan’s versatility through her collaborations with musicians from Berklee College of Music, designing album covers, concert promotions, and personal branding materials. Her role at Warner Music Group further demonstrates her ability to bring creative vision to mainstream music projects while maintaining artistic integrity.
The exhibition space at Flowing Space will be transformed into a semi-immersive environment where sound and visuals converge. Visitors will experience how different musical styles – from rock to electronic, hip-hop to classical – can be interpreted through design. The exhibition emphasizes the harmony that can emerge from seemingly disparate elements, reflecting Dan’s philosophy that music transcends genre boundaries.
Exhibition highlights include experimental poster designs, album artwork, and video installations that showcase Dan’s approach to translating musical elements into visual forms. The exhibition layout guides visitors through various interpretations of musical styles, demonstrating how different genres can find unique visual expression while maintaining a coherent artistic voice.
Workshop sessions during the exhibition period will offer visitors insights into Dan’s creative process, exploring how she translates musical emotions and rhythms into visual elements. These sessions aim to demonstrate the intricate relationship between sound and design, offering participants a hands-on experience in creative visualization.
“Distorted Waves” reflects Flowing Space’s mission of integrating art into daily life, presenting design not just as a visual medium but as a bridge between different forms of artistic expression. The exhibition invites visitors to experience how music and design can create meaningful dialogues that resonate beyond traditional boundaries.
