Many Pakistanis prefer buying a used electric scooter instead of a new one that reads more smoothly. When they look for one on OLX or PakWheels, they see a list of good photos, a reasonable price, and feel satisfied after riding it. But after two weeks of purchase, they are getting 45 km from the same scooter that was advertised as delivering 90 km.
On a petrol bike, engine wear shows up in sound, smoke and sluggishness that an experienced eye catches on a test ride. But the story is totally different on an e-scooter bike as battery degradation is invisible, silent and undetectable on a 10-minute ride around the block.
The thing is a battery that holds 50% of its original capacity feels the same as a healthy battery until the rider has been on the road for a certain period and sees the charge dropping faster. By the end of this article, you’ll know how to check before handing over any amount for a second-hand electric motorcycle scooter.
Battery Health: The Most Important Thing to Check
The battery is the only thing that decides whether a used electric scooter is worth buying at any price. Every other component, including tyres, brakes, lights, and body panels can be replaced for a few thousand rupees. A downgraded battery costs PKR 25,000 to 80,000 or more, depending on the chemistry and the model.
In order to see whether the batter performs well, do these three things.
The full-charge range test
Before you arrive, ask the seller to have the scooter fully charged and confirm it on the display when you get there. Take a known route of roughly 15 to 20 km at a normal city riding pace, then check how much battery percentage dropped.
A healthy battery on a scooter rated for 80 km will typically drop around 20 to 25% over a 15 to 20 km ride, although the exact figure varies depending on factors such as riding style, road conditions, traffic, rider weight, and weather.
If the battery percentage drops significantly more than expected under similar riding conditions, it may indicate reduced battery capacity and deserves further inspection. Do not accept a 5-minute test ride as a substitute for this. Insist on the real route test or walk away.
The visual inspection of the battery compartment:
Ask the seller to open the battery compartment and look for three things.
- See if there is any swelling or bulging of the battery pack, which looks like the casing is puffed outward rather than flat. A swollen battery is a safety risk, not just a performance issue.
- Find any visible corrosion or white powder residue around the terminals, which indicates moisture entry and cell damage.
- If there are any repair marks, tape, or rewiring that are not factory-standard, this suggests a previous battery problem that was patched rather than properly fixed
The charging time test
If possible, observe a partial charge cycle. Plug in the scooter and time how long it takes to go from a known percentage, say 30%, to 80%. Compare this against the manufacturer’s stated charging time for that range of charge.
If it charges significantly faster than expected, the battery may not be accepting a full charge, which is a sign of degraded cell capacity. If it takes far longer than expected, the battery management system or the charger may be failing.
How to Inspect the Motor and Controller
When on a test ride, accelerate from a standstill and listen for any grinding, clicking or irregular sound from the motor area. A healthy electric motor is nearly silent, so if you hear any mechanical noise during acceleration or at constant speed is a red flag.
Also, test the motor under a realistic load, ride up a slope or speed breaker at normal speed and feel whether it maintains its power or not. If it shows a problem under load, it is a sign of either motor wear or a battery that can’t supply peak current.
When checking the controller, turn on every electrical function together, and accelerate while they are active. A failing controller shows itself in this scenario through a delay in throttle response, a brief power cut during acceleration or unusual behavior in the display settings. These symptoms don’t appear on a 10-minute test ride.
Verify Documents, Ownership, and Warranty Coverage
Before making the purchase, make sure to see the original registration book and confirm that the name on the registration matches the seller’s CNIC. Any mismatch between the seller’s identity and the registered owner is a legal risk.
If the electric scooter being sold is a Yadea model and is within its warranty window based on the purchase date shown in the documents, ask the seller directly whether it is transferable. A used Yadea within its active warranty period is a different purchase from a used electric scooter with no warranty remaining.
And ask for any service records, receipts, or dealer visit history, as an electric scooter that was serviced at an authorized 3S showroom will have a paper trail. One with no records at all has either never been serviced or had informal repairs that are not documented and both situations raise the asking price risk.
Inspect the Frame, Tyres, Brakes, and Suspension
Run a hand along the underside of the frame and look at the welded joints around the footboard. Any cracks, re-welding marks, or uneven panel gaps around the body indicate a past accident that was repaired cosmetically. A repaired frame is not automatically unusable, but it changes the asking price and it changes what the scooter should be used for.
Inspect the tread on both tyres for uneven wear, cracks, or signs of excessive wear. If available, use a tyre tread depth gauge for a more accurate assessment, as it provides a clearer indication of the tyre’s remaining life. Tyres with worn tread on a second-hand scooter reduce wet-weather grip, and replacements cost PKR 2,000 to 4,000 per tyre, depending on the model.
Squeeze both brake levers before the test ride and feel for firmness. A spongy front brake that gives too easily under pressure indicates worn pads or an air pocket in a hydraulic brake line. Test the brakes at low speed during the ride to confirm actual stopping distance feels normal.
Ride the scooter over a speed breaker at normal speed and listen for any knocking or creaking from the front forks. A knocking sound from the suspension means the fork seals are worn, which leads to oil leakage and degraded handling over time.
Should You Buy a Used Electric Scooter in Pakistan?
A second-hand electric scooter can be a good purchase, but only if the battery, motor, and documentation pass inspection. The most expensive problems on an electric scooter are often invisible during a short test ride. That is why a careful battery check, a proper range test, and verification of ownership matter more than clean bodywork or a low asking price.
Before paying for any used e-scooter bike, carefully evaluate the battery, motor, controller, documentation, and overall condition of the scooter. While the battery remains the most expensive component to replace, a thorough inspection of every major system helps ensure you are making a smart long-term investment.
