Where Does Azarenka Live? Inside the Global Life of a Tennis Champion
Victoria Azarenka has spent nearly two decades crisscrossing the globe, but the question of where she actually calls home has a more interesting answer than most fans expect. The former world No. 1 from Belarus has built a life that spans continents, shaped by her career, her family, and a few unexpected twists along the way.
Her Belarusian Roots
Azarenka was born on July 31, 1989, in Minsk, Belarus. She grew up in a modest household — her mother worked at a tennis club, which is how Victoria first found her way onto a court at age seven. Belarus shaped her early identity, her work ethic, and her competitive edge, and she has continued to represent the country throughout her professional career, including at the Olympics where she won gold in mixed doubles and bronze in singles at London 2012.
But like many elite athletes from Eastern Europe, Azarenka left home young. At 15, she relocated to Arizona in the United States to pursue better training facilities and coaching. That move set the pattern for the rest of her life: a career defined by motion.
Her Primary Home Base
For the better part of her adult life, Victoria Azarenka has been based in the United States, primarily in Southern California and, for extended stretches, in Monte Carlo. Monaco has long been a favored residence for professional tennis players due to its central European location, favorable tax structure, and proximity to the European clay and grass swings.
However, Azarenka’s life took a significant turn after the birth of her son, Leo, in December 2016. Leo’s father is based in California, and a lengthy custody arrangement meant that Azarenka’s movements became legally and practically tied to the state. For a period, she was restricted from traveling internationally with her son, which forced her to make Los Angeles her center of gravity. During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, she skipped or withdrew from multiple major tournaments — including Wimbledon and the US Open — because leaving the country would have meant leaving Leo behind.
That period reshaped her entire approach to life and career. What had once been a nomadic existence became anchored to a single city out of necessity.
So, Where Does Azarenka Live Today?
As of recent years, Azarenka maintains a home in the Los Angeles area while also spending significant time in Europe, particularly around Monte Carlo and during the tournament season. She has spoken openly in interviews about being “a little bit of everywhere,” describing herself as someone without one fixed address in the traditional sense.
This dual-base arrangement allows her to stay close to her son during the school year while still accessing the European training and competition circuit. She has also been seen spending time in Miami, a popular hub for tennis professionals thanks to its tournament infrastructure, year-round warm weather, and large international community.
Azarenka has described Los Angeles as the place where her “normal life” happens — school runs, routines, friendships outside of tennis. Europe, by contrast, remains where much of her professional calendar unfolds.
Her Relationship with Belarus
Despite living abroad for most of her adult life, Azarenka has not severed ties with her birthplace. She has maintained Belarusian citizenship and continued to compete under the Belarusian flag, though geopolitical developments since 2022 have complicated that representation. Players from Belarus and Russia have competed as neutral athletes at several major events, and Azarenka has faced questions about her national affiliation at press conferences more than once.
She has generally avoided detailed political commentary, instead emphasizing her role as an athlete and a mother. Her family connections to Minsk remain, and she has visited over the years, but her day-to-day life is firmly rooted in the West.
A Life Built on Movement
For professional tennis players, “home” is often a flexible concept. The tour demands roughly 30 to 35 weeks of travel per year, and many players own property in multiple countries or simply live out of hotels and rentals for much of the season.
Azarenka’s situation is more complex than most because of her parenting responsibilities. Her answer to where she lives has changed multiple times over her career — from Minsk to Arizona, to Monte Carlo, to Los Angeles — and reflects the reality that elite sport rarely allows for permanence.
What remains constant is her approach: adapt, build routines wherever she lands, and keep competing. At an age when many of her contemporaries have retired, Azarenka continues to compete at the highest levels, splitting her time between coasts and continents, and treating the question of “home” as something she carries rather than somewhere she simply returns to.
