When Washing Machines Walk and Cows Attack: The UK's Most Bizarre Insurance Claims Revealed

UK-based broker shares the stranger side of insurance — a collection of bizarre but real claims that highlight the often-overlooked importance of comprehensive cover

Insurance might not have a reputation for being entertaining, but Clear Insurance Management, one of the UK’s leading independent commercial insurance brokers, has seen its fair share of jaw-dropping claims over the years. In a nod to the unpredictable nature of modern life, Clear has compiled a selection of its most unusual — and entirely real — claims, all handled by the team on behalf of clients.

From a self-propelled washing machine to a mysterious motorway cow, the cases below are a reminder that no two days in insurance are ever quite the same.

The Washing Machine That Went for a Walk A leaseholder returned home to a flooded kitchen and her washing machine several feet from where she’d left it. Uneven legs had caused it to vibrate across the floor during a spin cycle, pulling a water pipe from the wall in the process. Insurers paid for the damage to the floor.

The Phantom Cow of the MotorwayA client wrote off a £50,000 vehicle swerving to avoid a cow on a motorway in the early hours. Insurers traced a nearby farm — but every cow was accounted for. The client’s suggestion of a Highways Agency identity parade was not pursued. Insurers paid the claim, and recovery efforts were abandoned.

The Cannabis Farm Entrepreneur- A landlord discovered their tenant had converted a leased flat into a cannabis farm. After a police raid and forced entry, the client asked Clear one pressing question: could the heat lamps be sold on eBay to offset repair costs? The team explained the Proceeds of Crime Act. Insurers paid the claim.

The Robotic Lawnmower in the Water Hazard A golf club’s GPS-controlled robotic lawnmower was found upside down in a water hazard. Drag marks confirmed it had been thrown in deliberately. Insurers declined the claim twice before relenting. Total damage: £17,000.

The Missing Prada BagA hotel guest vanished for five months, then reappeared demanding a Prada bag allegedly containing £17,000 in goods — and threatening legal action for theft. The hotel had stored the bag, attempted contact repeatedly, and handed it to the police per their standard procedure. Insurers declined the claim. The guest had no evidence of any attempt to retrieve their belongings.

The Stick Figure Crash Report-  A truck collision claim arrived with hand-drawn illustrations from multiple angles. The stick figure driver had an “O” for a mouth. The report explained: “as you can see, the driver was suffering from shock.”

Neil Grimes, Claims Director at Clear Insurance Management, commented:

“Behind every unusual claim is a client who needed support at a genuinely difficult moment, however extraordinary the circumstances. It’s what makes this industry as rewarding as it is surprising.”

On the complexity of the claims process, Grimes added:

“Insurers primary goal is to pay all claims presented but on the occasion where there is a basis to decline or limit a settlement, having an experienced broker in your corner matters to challenge where appropriate that decision is vital. Whether you’re a landlord dealing with the aftermath of a criminal tenant, a business owner facing a disputed liability, or a fleet operator caught in a jurisdictional argument between insurers, the outcome often hinges on how the claim is presented and pursued. Our job is to make sure clients aren’t left navigating that alone.”
