What it leaves out

How it works and an example to tryShow less

How to use the result

For a long, liquidation is entry times one minus one over leverage plus maintenance margin; for a short, entry times one plus one over leverage minus maintenance. Distance is the percentage move from entry. Safe leverage is one divided by the tolerated move plus maintenance.

Example to try

A 10× long from £60,000 with 0.5% maintenance liquidates at £54,300, a 9.5% move. To survive a 20% drop, leverage must be no more than 4.9×.
