Costa Rica is filled with natural beauty and adventure. There are volcanoes, rainforests, waterfalls, beaches, and a great diversity of wildlife. There is a lot to see and do, even as it is a relatively small country. If you have a week to travel, this 7-day Costa Rica itinerary gives you an excellent opportunity to explore the best of Costa Rica, from the cool mountains to the warm Pacific Ocean.
Day 1: Arrival in San José
Most international travelers arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport, located in Costa Rica’s capital of San José. This busy city tends to serve as a hub for most travelers and is suitable for an initial rest before your travels start.
Upon landing, you will be checking into a hotel that is close by to unwind. If you arrive early in the day, you can take the time to visit the National Museum, walk around the Central Market, or visit the historic Barrio Amón district. You might also consider trying a local restaurant that serves traditional Costa Rican food such as casado or gallo pinto.
Staying overnight in San José allows you to refocus and prepare for the days ahead.
Day 2: Explore Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna
On the second day you will transition from urban to rural areas. Either drive or catch a shuttle to La Fortuna, a small town located near Arenal Volcano. The trip will take approximately 3.5 to 4 hours via scenic mountain roads.
Arenal Volcano is perhaps the most recognized sight in Costa Rica. While it is no longer actively erupting, the volcano still rises with its ideal cone shape sticking out from the surrounding lush rain forest. Once in La Fortuna, check out the La Fortuna Waterfall which tumbles straight into a natural pool at a distance of 70 meters. There is a short hike down to the waterfall, and although there are many steps, the views and swimming in the pool make it worthwhile.
In the evening, relax in one of the natural hot springs in the area. Resorts such as Tabacón, EcoTermales, and Baldi all offer volcanic-heated natural pools that are perfect for a nice soaking experience under the stars.
Day 3: Adventure Activities in La Fortuna
La Fortuna is recognized for its multitude of adventure options. You can start your adventure with a zipline tour over the canopy of the forest, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the jungle and volcano.
White-water rafting is another popular option on the Balsa or Sarapiquí River. There are rapids for beginners and experienced rafters, depending upon your confidence levels. Wildlife boat safaris are very popular on the Peñas Blancas River, where you may get the chance to see monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and tropical birds.
The afternoon can be spent in Arenal Volcano National Park on a leisurely hike. You can walk on old lava flows and get close views of the volcano. You may even find hanging bridges in the area that allow you to walk above the forest and look for wildlife in another way.
Day 4: Travel to Monteverde Cloud Forest
On Day 4, you’ll transfer west to Monteverde, one of the most well-known cloud forests in Costa Rica. It will take roughly 3.5 to 4 hours to travel from La Fortuna to Monteverde, and you’ll even get to cross Lake Arenal part of the way by boat (it is optional, but very scenic). The road into Monteverde is steep and unpaved, but the views are stunning.
Monteverde is at a higher altitude, so it is cooler and foggy a good portion of the time as well. This area is known for its biodiversity, especially birds like the resplendent quetzal, which is known for its amazing colors. In the afternoon, you’ll spend your time walking the trails in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The sight of old trees, moss-covered branches, and rare trees will take your mind off the steep trail. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a warm meal at a local restaurant, then go to bed because the next day will be full of nature.
Day 5: Hanging Bridges and Nature Walks
Begin your day with a stroll through the Selvatura Park or Sky Adventures Park. Both include long hanging bridges that can take you across the forest. You will be walking through the treetops where you can see ferns, epiphytes, butterflies, hummingbirds and, if you are very lucky, monkeys!
After lunch you can go to the Monteverde Butterfly Garden or Bat Jungle for a fun and educational experience, especially for families. You will learn about Costa Rica’s amazing insects and bats and what their roles are in the ecosystem.
Then at night you will want to do a guided night wildlife tour. Many animals in Monteverde are nocturnal and so this will be your chance to see all the interesting frogs, insects and small mammals that come out after dark. Guided tours generally start around 6:00 p.m. and will last around two hours.
Day 6: Head to Santa Teresa for Beach Time
On the 6th day, you’ll go from the misty forest to the sun lit shoreline. You’ll head to Santa Teresa, a yoga and surfing beach town on the Nicoya Peninsula. The trip will take 5 to 6 hours including a ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya from Puntarenas to Paquera.
As you arrive, long beaches, palm trees, and soft waves will greet you. This small town is a favorite spot for surfers, yogis, and beach lovers alike. You’ll likely spend the afternoon walking the warm sand, taking in the sun setting, and dining at a beachfront café. This tranquil little beach town is a nice balance to some of the adventure you have had, and many travelers take this opportunity to enjoy the laid back vibe for a couple of extra days.
Day 7: Surf, Relax, and Stay in a Boutique Hotel
On your final day in Costa Rica, you should spend the day relaxing on the beach. At Santa Teresa you can find excellent waves for surfing year-round, making it one of the top surfing spots in the entire country. For new surfers and those experienced at surfing, there are many surf lessons and board rentals available. If surfing isn’t your thing, you could sign up for a yoga class, book a massage, or go for a long walk on the beach. The feeling you get in Santa Teresa is calming and friendly, and perfect for relaxing before flying home.
It is also the best time to enjoy boutique hotels Santa Teresa Costa Rica is known for. The boutique hotels offer a contemporary design, tropical landscaping, and personalized service. They are more than often eco or green hotels, as well as being steps away from the beach. A beautiful boutique hotel almost always offers luxury accommodations with a local feel.
Optional: Best Hotels in Costa Rica to Consider
Throughout your journey, Costa Rica offers a wide range of accommodation choices. From eco-lodges in the jungle to beachside resorts, you’ll find something for every type of traveler.
Some of the best hotels in Costa Rica are located in La Fortuna and Santa Teresa. In La Fortuna, Nayara Springs is a luxury resort surrounded by forest and hot springs. In Santa Teresa, boutique hotels like Bloom Boutique Hotel offer a peaceful and stylish experience close to the beach.
Choosing the right hotel enhances your trip by providing a comfortable place to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
