India’s biggest online shopping window of the year is nearly upon us. Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great Indian Festival – the twin e-commerce sales that kick off the festive season – are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, and both platforms are already warming up with teasers, bank tie-ups and early wishlist nudges. Official dates were yet to be announced at the time of writing, but if past years are any guide, the two events will land in the same window and run head-to-head for roughly a week.
That rivalry is good news for shoppers. When the two largest marketplaces in the country fight over the same customers in the same week, prices on smartphones, televisions, laptops and appliances tend to fall to their lowest levels of the year. The catch is separating the genuine lows from the discounts that only look impressive.
Tracking how a product’s price has moved over months – not days – is the simplest way to tell a real festive low from a repackaged everyday price.
What the Discount Badge Doesn’t Tell You
Every festive sale produces the same visual language: struck-through prices, percentage badges, countdown clocks. What none of it reveals is the one number that actually matters – what the product was selling for last month.
This gap is where shoppers most often lose money. A listing’s “original” price can drift upward in the run-up to a sale, making the eventual markdown look steeper than it is. A discount badge measured against an inflated anchor is not a saving; it is arithmetic. The defence is straightforward: look at the price trend, not the price tag.
This has become far easier to do. Before adding anything expensive to the cart, a shopper can pull up the Amazon price history of any product in India and see, on a single chart, its highest, lowest and average price over the past year. The same check works for the rival platform – a quick look at the Flipkart price history for a product shows instantly whether a Big Billion Days figure genuinely undercuts what the item sold for through the year. If the “sale price” sits at or near the twelve-month low, buy with confidence. If it hovers around the average, waiting may pay.
The Final Price Is Never the Listed Price
Comparing the two platforms on listed price alone also misses half the picture. During the festive week, the amount that leaves your account is shaped by a stack of offers layered on top of the sticker: instant discounts on partner bank cards, exchange bonuses for old devices, platform cashback and coupon codes applied at checkout.
Experienced shoppers therefore compare the final effective price – sticker minus every applicable offer – across both apps before paying. On a mid-range smartphone or a large appliance, the difference between a well-stacked purchase and a careless one can run into thousands of rupees, even when the listed prices look identical.
Coupons deserve particular attention because they are the easiest layer to forget. Many codes are category-specific or expire quickly, and a quick check for current coupon codes takes a minute at checkout and regularly tips the balance between two otherwise similar offers.
A Simple Playbook for the Sale Week
Build your wishlist now, on both apps. Prices for the same product can diverge sharply between platforms once the sales open.
Check the chart before the cart. A twelve-month price history answers in seconds what no discount badge will: is this actually cheap?
Stack every layer. Listed discount, bank offer, exchange value, coupon – total them all before choosing where to buy.
Watch the quieter categories. Fashion, kitchen appliances, audio gear and home products often see deep cuts with far less hype than phones and TVs. A daily scan of the running deal listings is a low-effort way to catch these before stock runs out.
Don’t chase the timer. Countdown clocks are designed to rush decisions. If a price is a genuine annual low, it will usually reappear at similar levels later in the season.
Buy the Trend, Not the Badge
The upcoming sale season will deliver real savings – the competition between platforms guarantees it. But the shoppers who capture those savings will be the ones who treat every discount as a claim to be verified rather than a gift to be grabbed. A minute spent checking a product’s price trend, and another comparing the effective price across platforms, is the cheapest insurance policy of the festive season.
