The Totem Trick That Doesn’t Work on Wings of Nihility

Totem Trick

Been maining Reaper since Endwalker, currently sitting at ilvl 780 after the Unmaking grind ate my last two weeks. I went in assuming Wings of Nihility worked like every other Dawntrail wing set — bank totems, guarantee the mount eventually, stop caring about the rare drop roll. It doesn’t work that way, and by the time I figured that out I’d already burned close to twenty clears bouncing between half-formed PF groups chasing a currency exchange that doesn’t exist yet. Ended up looking at a Wings of Nihility service instead of gambling more nights on Party Finder resets.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you upfront.

Why Wings of Nihility Skips the Usual Dawntrail EX Totem Safety Net

Six of the seven Dawntrail Extreme wing mounts — Wings of Ruin, Wings of Resolve, Wings of Eternity, Wings of Knighthood, Wings of Death, Wings of Mist — have gotten or are expected to get a totem exchange as the patch cycle moves on. Farm the trial, bank currency, and once the exchange unlocks, ninety-nine totems buys the mount outright regardless of how the coffer feels about you that day. I’d farmed two of those wing sets that way already, so when Wings of Nihility dropped with The Unmaking (Extreme) in Patch 7.5, I just assumed the same math applied eventually. Clear enough times, eat the totem tax, walk away with the mount guaranteed.

It’s not there. Every clear of The Unmaking (Extreme) hands out two Totems of Naught, and ten of those buy an ilvl 785 Naught weapon of your choice at Uah’shepya in Solution Nine — that part’s real, that part’s fast, five clears and you’re picking your weapon. But the totems don’t touch the mount. Among the Dawntrail Extreme trial wing drops, the older mounts have received or are expected to receive the usual 99-totem safety net. Wings of Nihility is the current outlier because that exchange is not live yet. I only really understood that after checking Uah’shepya’s exchange list myself and realizing Totems of Naught only covered weapons, not the mount — at which point clear eighteen suddenly felt a lot less like progress.

Naught Grows Is Where Farm Pulls Turn Back Into Prog Pulls

The fight itself isn’t the hard part, mechanically. It’s a three-phase encounter against Enuo on a circular arena where stepping off the edge just ends your pull instantly, no soft-enrage grace period. The mechanic that actually wiped my groups more than once, embarrassingly late into the farm, was Naught Grows. Positioning reads, stack timing, arena-edge punishment, not a lot of room to autopilot through it even after a dozen clears. I play Reaper as Voss Kiraan on Cactuar, and my static Late Night Prog ate two wipes in one night off a single bad read, and that’s a fast way to lose a session’s worth of clears.

None of that changes the totem math above, to be clear — it just means every wipe is a wasted attempt at both the weapon progress and the mount roll, which stings more once you know the mount roll isn’t insured by anything.

The Ilvl 770 Gate That Stalls a Farm Before It Starts

The Unmaking (Extreme) requires ilvl 770 to queue, on top of clearing the Normal trial and finishing “A Grave Presentiment” in the main scenario. That’s not a high bar this deep into Patch 7.5, but if you’re a returning player or juggling an alt job, it’s enough to stall a farm session before it starts. I didn’t hit it on my first attempt at unlocking — had to gear up through tomestone gear and a few quick upgrades for about four days before the duty would even let me queue, which is time that doesn’t show up in anyone’s “how many clears until the mount” math.

Three Weeks, Twenty Clears, Zero Wings of Nihility

Session Clears Totems banked Wings of Nihility?
Week 1 (PF pickup groups) 6 12 No
Week 2 (static, 3 nights) 9 18 No
Week 3 (static, 2 nights) 5 10 No

Twenty clears, forty totems, zero mounts. At 2 totems per clear, my 40 totems were already enough for four weapons, but still represented zero guaranteed mount progress. That’s the part that got old — I wasn’t short on progress, I was short on the one drop that doesn’t respond to progress at all. If a standard 99-totem exchange does show up for this mount later in the patch, two totems per clear works out to roughly fifty clears for the pity path. Until then, fifty clears is still just fifty loot rolls, not fifty steps toward anything guaranteed.

What I’d Tell Anyone Starting This Farm Today

Grab the weapon early since ten totems clears that in five runs and it’s not RNG-gated at all. Past that, decide honestly whether you’re farming for the mount or farming because stopping feels like giving up — those are different goals with different time costs, and only one of them has a currency safety net right now. I kept going because quitting at clear fifteen felt worse than clear five, which is exactly the kind of reasoning that gets people to clear thirty. If a totem exchange for the mount does get added later in the patch cycle the way players expect from earlier Dawntrail Extreme mounts, that changes the math completely — it just isn’t live yet, so don’t farm as if it already is.

Already got your wings and looking for the next thing to chase? There’s a full FFXIV mounts catalog worth a look, everything from old Extreme trial drops to the Gold Saucer stuff nobody bothers grinding out anymore.
