What are the requirements for DC meters in charging stations for electric vehicles?

DC meters

Not only charging stations as well as the expansion of the same for e-cars or bicycles are essential when it comes to revolutionizing mobility. Charging takes time for drivers, so these points have to be factored into the schedule when longer distances have to be covered. To ensure that the interruption to driving time is as short as possible, solutions are available to improve recharging. DC charging technology, which is already integrated in some stations, is used here. DC meters are installed here in accordance with standards. HPC systems already offer fast charging to reduce waiting time. In this way, the e-car can be charged with electricity while drivers use the break to do their shopping in the meantime.

Fast charging with the support of so-called high power chargers for electric vehicles

High Power Chargers are considered the modern solution for charging electric vehicles faster than usual. Especially when things have to be done quickly, the efficient high power chargers offer several advantages over other charging options for e-mobiles. In Germany, there are therefore more and more ultrafast charging stations in a number of places, and their performance is impressive. Whereas in the past it was necessary to wait at least a quarter of an hour, today’s ultrafast charging stations only offer a time of just under five minutes. Within this time frame, it is possible to recharge enough energy to continue driving for up to 100 kilometers. This revolution in charging delivers clear advantages over predecessor models in all areas of automobility.

That’s why the new IEC 62053-41 standard is an important milestone for charging stations: the best solution for DC meters.

With the IEC 62053-41 standard, which was set up in the summer of 2021, there is finally a basis for DC meters to which manufacturers can orient themselves. In doing so, it should ensure that the measurement of DC energy in charging stations for e-cars is always consistent and vehicle owners thus have the same options everywhere in the country. Nothing would be more annoying than traveling long distances by e-car only to find out that the charging station is not capable of fast charging but operates according to old concepts. In order to finally achieve equality in Germany, the IEC 62053-41 standard offers the best solution for DC meters.

Practical orientation for manufacturers of ultrasonic charging stations in Germany

It is now much easier for manufacturers to obtain orientation and comply with the relevant specifications. In particular, legal certainty should exist for the producers of charging columns through the integration of the standard, which did not exist before. If the charging station companies follow the IEC 62053-41 standard, their products should also be approved more quickly, since it will be transparent to see whether all the requirements have been met.

Ultrafast charging stations offer numerous advantages for traffic and for owners of all types of e-cars

With so-called test systems of E-Mobility for AC and DC Charging Stations, it is possible to precisely check whether all guidelines have been listed as required by the legal system. Nevertheless, the new standard for charging stations offers a plus not only for manufacturers of these stations, but also for e-vehicle owners. Where charging used to be a complicated and tedious task, it is now easier than ever, ultrafast charging stations make it possible. Here, charging with direct current ensures fast charging. Despite fast charging with direct current and ultrafast charging columns, kilowatt-hours may disappear along the way. Nevertheless, the new columns offer a faster method than a few years ago.

The new standard leads to improved structures for e-mobility on Germany’s roads

The so-called VDE application rule and the new applicable standard also offer an advantage in terms of expanding electromobility on Germany’s and Europe’s roads. In the long term, this will make it possible to implement a network of fast charging stations that will help motorists and thus add more fluctuation to the flow of traffic. Binding analysis measures for measuring the DC energy in charging columns pave the way for the future and make charging not only faster but also more reliable. The next step is to develop a standard for special test equipment for DC meters, so that in the end a flawless measurement process is possible that leads to faster processes in the production of the columns, in the approval and ultimately in the charging by drivers.

Solid legal framework through a precise standard that will still undergo some adjustments in the future

The new standard was issued as a so-called harmonized standard. However, it has not yet reached the end of its development, because new processes mean that the standard is still undergoing new adaptations in order to perfect the entire process. It may therefore be several years before the standard for charging stations actually provides the exact basis for manufacturers, as is desired. Work is already underway on a second edition of the standard.
