Planning a trip is easier than ever, with a wealth of online resources just a click away. But planning a one-of-a kind, rewarding trip that really helps you understand and appreciate a destination – rather than simply doing the same things every other tourist does – can be challenging. Lizia Santos, the founder of Citycatt, joins Startup Savant to share how her startup can help travelers plan unique, life-changing vacations.

From Journalist to Entrepreneur
Santos is a journalist and doesn’t have a hospitality background. While some might consider that a detriment when founding a travel startup, she’s found it to be an asset. “I don’t think the idea for Citycatt would have come about if I was in hospitality,” she said during her interview with Startup Savants. “Part of why I had an idea so outside of the box was because of who I am and my different roles in life. I’m a mom, I’m a journalist, and I’m an expert. And these three things came together and made me think about the idea.”
She also has a passion for travel with a personal touch. As a young adult, Santos loved traveling to places where she knew people. “It just went to another level where I found out that experiencing destinations through that insider view,” she said during the interview. “It was just so much better than trying to find information online.”
Finally, her journalism skills serve her well when it comes to crafting unique travel experiences for clients and researching off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Santos Joins Startups Savants Podcast
In her interview with Startup Savants, Santos explains that Cittycatts has carved out a niche in the travel industry crafting bespoke experiences you won’t find in a guidebook. To do that, the company uses “cats” – people local to a given area who know all the best places to go and things to do.
During her interview, she explains her vision for the company. “What if we could create a community of reliable sources and destinations that travelers could use as resources for planning trips?” she says. “I applied that very basic journalistic principle to a problem in hospitality, and that’s how Citycatt came to be.”
