Why did TikTok partner with C2PA?

The social media platform TikTok announced on Thursday that it’s partnering with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to automatically label AI-generated content (AIGC) when it’s uploaded from certain other platforms. The aim is to help creators express their creativity with AI-generated content safely and responsibly.

TikTok said that it has become the first video sharing platform to implement their Content Credentials technology and is also launching new media literacy resources that will be developed with guidance from MediaWise and WITNESS.

“Starting today, we’re expanding auto-labeling to AIGC created on some other platforms by launching the ability to read Content Credentials, a technology from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). Content Credentials attach metadata to content, which we can use to instantly recognize and label AIGC. This capability started rolling out today on images and videos, and will be coming to audio-only content soon,” said TikTok

Dana Rao, General Counsel and Chief Trust Officer, Adobe, said that they are excited to welcome TikTok’s community of creators and users all over the world to both the C2PA and CAI.

“With TikTok’s vast community of creators and users globally, we are thrilled to welcome them to both the C2PA and CAI as they embark on the journey to provide more transparency and authenticity on the platform. At a time when any digital content can be altered, it is essential to provide ways for the public to discern what is true. Today’s announcement is a critical step towards achieving that outcome,” said Rao.

Alex Mahadevan, Director, MediaWise, said, “Our Teen Fact-Checking Network has built an audience with innovative media literacy videos on TikTok since 2019. Five years later, we’re thrilled to empower even more people to separate fact from fiction online.”

How will this work?

The social media platform said that in the coming months, it will start attaching content credentials to its content, which will remain on the content when downloaded. According to TikTok, users will be able to use C2PA’s Verify tool to help identify AIGC that was made on TikTok and even learn when, where, and how the content was made or edited.

According to the report, TikTok will release 12 videos throughout the year that highlight universal media literacy skills while explaining how TikTok tools like AIGC labels can further interpret content while working with MediaWise.

TikTok said it will also launch a campaign to raise awareness around AI labeling and potentially misleading AIGC with a series of videos we developed with expert guidance from WITNESS.
