The history of the Mnembar Atoll

The Mnembar Atoll is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the eastern Caribbean Sea. The atoll is made up of forty-eight sand and coral islands, with a land area of just over three square miles. The name Mnembar comes from the native Arawak name for the island, which means “broken tooth.”

Historically, the atoll was used by the Arawak people as a fishing ground. European explorers first discovered it in 1493 while searching for the Island of Demons. At that time, it was known as La Solitude (loneliness). Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León named it Isla de las Munecas (Island of Glasses). In 1511, Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa named it Ilha da Madeira (Island of Leather).

In 1625, English explorer John Hawkins named it Mnemba after observing a group of petrels perched on one of the islands. The atoll became part of the British Empire in 1783 when Great Britain acquired possession of Grenada from Spain following the Treaty of Paris.

The first American settlers arrived on the island in 1825 and began to cultivate sugar cane. During World War II, military facilities were installed on the atoll to protect against German naval attack. In 1956, Congress passed legislation establishing an unincorporated territory known as Americal Samoa and turning over administration of Americal Samoa to Bernice

What to bring on the Mnembar Atoll Tour

The Mnembar Atoll Tour is advertised by Zanzibar day trips as a water sports paradise, and it certainly is! However, the tour also includes a visit to Nungwi, an abandoned island town with stunning views. The town was once home to about 1,000 people who depended on the fishing industry for their livelihoods. Unfortunately, the town’s economy collapsed in the 1990s and by 2001 it had completely disappeared. Today, visitors can only enjoy the views from the island.

The Mnembar Atoll Tour is definitely not your average tourist destination! It’s unique in that it combines an amazing water sports experience with a glimpse into history. If you’re looking for something different to do while on your vacation, this is definitely worth considering.
