When you need money quickly, the lender is rarely the one that slows you down. Most digital lenders now decide in minutes. The hours get lost somewhere else: an OTP going to a SIM you stopped using in 2022, a bank statement saved as a screenshot, net banking credentials nobody in the house remembers.
An urgent personal loan moves about as fast as your preparation allows. This guide is about that preparation.
Step one: check if you’re eligible for a personal loan
Spend two minutes on the basics before you open any loan app. Lending platforms such as Prefr publish their baseline criteria online:
| Criteria | Typical baseline | Why it matters |
| Age | 21 to 55 years | Outside the range, the application stops at the first screen |
| Net monthly income | At least ₹15,000 | Your monthly income helps decide the amount of EMI you are eligible for. |
| Credit score | 650 or above | Affects approval, speed and the rate you’re offered |
| Existing EMIs | Within about 50% of income, including the new loan | Above this, expect a smaller offer or a decline |
The age, income and score figures are Prefr’s, while the EMI ceiling is a common lender guideline.
A score that only just clears the minimum is more likely to be sent for manual review, and manual review runs on office hours, which is no help at 10 pm on a Saturday. Also remember that checking eligibility is a soft enquiry and leaves your score alone, whereas firing off formal applications to four lenders at once doesn’t.
Step two: get your documents ready
You won’t need a single sheet of paper for an urgent loan online, but you will need a few things in digital form.
Everyone needs their PAN, their Aadhaar (with the linked mobile number still active, since that’s where the KYC OTP goes) and either a net banking login or a working debit card for the EMI mandate. If you’re salaried, add recent salary slips and three to six months of statements from your salary account. If you’re self-employed, the lender will want six to twelve months of statements and possibly an ITR.
Get the statements as the official PDF from net banking. Screenshots and scanned printouts are one of the most common reasons an application stalls. If the app offers Account Aggregator consent, where your bank shares data with the lender directly, say yes.
Step three: the application
With eligibility sorted and documents open, an urgent personal loan application runs through six stages, and you can do all of them in the Prefr instant personal loan app on app stores or on a lender’s website.
It starts with a quick eligibility check (phone number, PAN, date of birth, income), which takes under a minute. Then comes the application form. Type your name exactly as it appears on your PAN, give your employer’s registered name rather than the brand everyone knows it by, and enter the salary that actually reaches your account, not your CTC. Any mismatch sends the file to a person to check.
KYC is usually an Aadhaar OTP. Some lenders use video KYC, which needs an agent to be free, so a late-night application can end up waiting for the morning shift. After that, you’ll see the offer and its Key Fact Statement.
The e-mandate step is where most applications trip. You authorise the lender to deduct EMIs from your account using net banking or a debit card, and joint accounts, inactive net banking or an expired card will all stop it cold. If it fails, try another account or switch methods. Last comes the eSign, another Aadhaar OTP, and then disbursal.
Before you accept: three checks, even in a hurry
When an urgent loan is needed, it’s tempting to tap accept on the first offer you see. Give the Key Fact Statement two minutes before you do.
Look at the APR first; it includes the processing fee, so it shows what the loan really costs. On ₹5 lakh at 18% over 18 months with a ₹15,000 processing fee plus GST, the APR comes to 25.4%. Then look at how much will actually reach your account.
The fee and GST are taken off before disbursal, so if the hospital needs ₹1.5 lakh, make sure the credited amount covers it and not just the sanctioned figure. And check the lender’s name. Many apps connect you to an RBI-registered bank or NBFC rather than lending themselves, and you ought to know who holds your loan.
If you have second thoughts after the money arrives, RBI’s digital lending rules give you a cooling-off period during which you can return the principal plus proportionate APR without paying a foreclosure penalty.
Urgency is what scammers look for
Fraudulent loan apps target people who need money fast because someone in a hurry skips checks. Walk away from any urgent loan offer that wants a fee before disbursal, lands unasked in your WhatsApp, won’t say who the lender is, or asks for access to your contacts or photo gallery. Regulated lenders never ask you to pay upfront.
Where to apply?
If timing matters most, start there: approval on Prefr is instant, and in most cases the money is in your account within 30 minutes, though with some lending partners it can stretch upto 24 hours. Loans come from RBI-registered partners including Aditya Birla Capital, Poonawalla Fincorp and SMFG India Credit. You can borrow anything from ₹51,000 to ₹5 lakh and repay over 6 to 60 months, at 18% to 30% a year depending on your profile.
Cleared the table in step one? You’re ready. The eligibility criteria and document list for an urgent personal loan are on Prefr’s personal loan page.
Worth remembering
Nearly all the speed comes from what you do before you tap “apply”. An active Aadhaar-linked number, statements in the right format and details that match your documents will save you more time than any app can, and two minutes on the KFS protects you from a bad deal.
