Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from answering simple text prompts to independently executing complex tasks. The next logical step in this technological evolution is agentic commerce. This involves autonomous software agents actively buying, selling, and negotiating services on behalf of human users. However, this massive shift introduces a serious infrastructure problem. Traditional financial systems were built entirely for human consumers holding plastic credit cards.
To bridge this gap, GoBTC Pay has stepped directly into the emerging arena of machine-to-machine payments. The Bitcoin payment protocol, originally developed by mining infrastructure company GoMining, recently joined Agentic Commerce Pioneers Edition II: The Shopping Agent Challenge as a Diamond Sponsor.
Hosted by Agnic.AI, the international hackathon pushed developers to move past conceptual pitch decks. Instead, they were required to build fully functional prototypes for AI-driven commerce. The intense remote build sprint ran from September 15 to September 20. The event officially concluded with a hybrid Demo Day on September 21, hosted at the OneEleven innovation hub in Toronto, Canada.
GoBTC Pay did not just write a corporate sponsorship check. The company operated a dedicated competition track specifically focused on decentralized settlements. They also secured a seat on the judging panel to evaluate the technical viability of the final submissions.
The GoBTC Pay track presented participating teams with a highly specific challenge. Developers had to give an AI agent its own Bitcoin wallet, allowing it to complete a checkout process with absolutely zero human intervention. Participants included university student developers, seasoned machine learning engineers, and specialized corporate teams. Their collective goal was to prove that AI agents can handle real economic transactions securely.
The broader Agnic.AI hackathon challenge asked builders to create an AI shopping assistant capable of purchasing goods from almost any standard online merchant. But for GoBTC Pay, the event offered a crucial testing ground for an entirely different type of transaction. The company wants to facilitate autonomous agents paying other autonomous agents for digital services.
Agent-to-agent commerce introduces strict payment requirements that differ wildly from conventional online shopping. These machine transactions will likely be microscopic in size and incredibly frequent. They will constantly cross international borders. They will also occur without a human cardholder present to clear a bank fraud alert or input a text verification code. For example, a research agent might need to instantly pay a data scraping agent for access to an API before it can continue its own workflow.
This dynamic creates a massive hurdle for legacy payment infrastructure. GoBTC Pay is positioning the Bitcoin network as the ultimate settlement layer for these autonomous interactions.
”Before long, people will stop placing orders themselves. Their AI agents will take that routine over. The agents will choose the products and pay for the orders on our behalf,” said Roman Yermoshyn, General Manager at GoBTC Pay and a judge at the Agnic.AI Demo Day. “Agents will also start settling up with each other for the services they provide to one another, and they will do it in Bitcoin, a genuinely independent international currency.”
Technically, GoBTC Pay takes a unique approach to digital settlements. The protocol settles transactions natively on the core Bitcoin base layer. It avoids relying on complex secondary routing, and it does not default to converting payments into fiat currency.
This model changes the fundamental economics of a transaction. Payments are completely free for the software agent acting as the payer. Meanwhile, merchants face a microscopic acquiring fee of just 0.2 percent. That fee is subsequently divided between the wallet provider initiating the transaction and the mining pool processing the settlement.
As AI agents become more sophisticated, they will inevitably need a native currency that operates outside the rigid constraints of traditional banking hours and geographic borders. By sponsoring this hackathon, GoBTC Pay is actively testing whether Bitcoin can finally become the default financial rail for the incoming machine economy.
