24 Hours of Le Mans: History, Stats and Facts
Drivers raced to their cars to start the race between 1925 and 1969. F1 driver JackyIckx protested against this start in 1969. The green flag was given to the cars after they had completed a warm up lap.
Le Mans is a race that has been regarded as one of the most dangerous on the World Endurance Calendar. Large pieces of debris crashed into crowds at Circuit de la Sarthe in 1955, killing Pierre Levegh, a French driver, and 83 spectators.
Safety is of paramount importance these days. Peter Dumbreck, a Scottish driver, was able to escape an epic car crash in 1999 that saw his Mercedes CLR fly through the air and land in the forest, just before Indianapolis corner. You can see the heart-instinct moment on YouTube (opens in new window)
It’s common knowledge that race winners are celebrated with champagne. But did you know that this tradition was created at Le Mans by Dan Gurney, a US racing driver? Ford driver Gurney snatched a bottle of champers after beating Ferrari in 1967. Gurney said that Henry Ford was later with us on the podium. We were thrilled to have just beat Ferrari. It was an amazing moment so I just sprayed it around.”
