I’m Dr. Michael Dent, an OB/GYN physician and the Founder and CEO of HealthLynked. Earlier in my career, I founded NeoGenomics, which has grown into one of the nation’s leading cancer diagnostics companies. While I’m incredibly proud of what NeoGenomics has accomplished in advancing cancer diagnostics, HealthLynked was born from a very different realization—one that came from more than three decades of caring for patients every day.
As a practicing physician, I saw firsthand that one of the greatest obstacles in healthcare wasn’t always diagnosing or treating disease. It was simply helping patients access care. People routinely waited weeks or months for appointments, spent hours on hold trying to reach a medical office, completed the same paperwork over and over again, and struggled to coordinate care between multiple providers who often didn’t have access to the same information.
Healthcare had become increasingly fragmented. Patients were expected to navigate a complex system largely on their own, while physicians and their staff were overwhelmed by an ever-growing administrative burden that took time away from patient care.
I founded HealthLynked because I believed healthcare should function more like the technology we use every day—connected, intelligent, and centered around the individual. Patients should be able to find the right physician, schedule appointments effortlessly, securely manage and share their health records, and receive personalized guidance throughout their healthcare journey.
Today, HealthLynked has evolved far beyond a scheduling platform. 2) You are a practicing physician as well as a technology entrepreneur. How does seeing patients first-hand shape the products you choose to build?
Being an active physician gives me something that no amount of market research or data analytics can provide—a daily understanding of the real problems patients and medical practices face.
When I’m seeing patients, I experience the same frustrations they do. I watch staff spend valuable time answering phones instead of helping patients. I see physicians buried under paperwork instead of practicing medicine. I see patients waiting weeks for appointments, struggling to obtain records, or becoming confused by an increasingly complicated healthcare system.
That perspective fundamentally shapes how we build technology.
I never begin by asking, “What can AI do?” Instead, I ask, “What problems waste the most time? What creates the greatest frustration? How can healthcare be made simpler, more accessible, and more effective for everyone involved?”
Every product we develop has to solve a meaningful real-world problem. If it doesn’t improve patient access, reduce administrative burden, help physicians practice more efficiently, or improve health outcomes, then it doesn’t belong on our roadmap.
Being both a physician and a technology entrepreneur also gives me an appreciation for balance. Technology should never replace the physician-patient relationship—it should strengthen it. AI should eliminate repetitive administrative work so physicians can spend more time listening, educating, and caring for patients.
Medicine has taught me that healthcare isn’t simply about treating disease. It’s about removing every obstacle that prevents patients from receiving the right care at the right time. That’s the philosophy behind every innovation we build at HealthLynked.
3) What have been the defining milestones in HealthLynked’s journey from its founding to where the business stands today?
HealthLynked has evolved through several distinct phases, each building upon the last as healthcare itself has evolved.
Our first milestone was creating one of the largest physician directories in the United States. We wanted to make it dramatically easier for patients to find the right healthcare providers based on specialty, location, insurance participation, and availability.
The next major milestone was developing a comprehensive personal health record platform that allows patients to organize, manage, and securely share their medical information. We recognized early that patients should own their health information and be able to provide every physician they see with accurate, up-to-date medical records. Better information leads to better medical decisions.
As healthcare became increasingly digital, we expanded into online appointment scheduling, allowing patients to connect directly with participating providers while helping practices reduce scheduling inefficiencies.
The emergence of artificial intelligence created another transformational opportunity. We began developing autonomous AI voice agents capable of answering phones, scheduling appointments, onboarding patients, performing intake, collecting medical histories, verifying insurance, answering routine questions, and assisting practices around the clock. These technologies allow medical staff to focus on the patients who need their attention most while dramatically improving the patient experience.
Today, we’re entering what I believe is the most exciting phase of our company’s evolution. HealthLynked is becoming an AI-powered healthcare infrastructure company. Our platform is expanding beyond scheduling into comprehensive care management, personalized healthcare guidance, preventive care coordination, remote patient engagement, and continuous support throughout a patient’s healthcare journey.

4) For readers outside the healthcare sector, how significant is the problem of simply getting a doctor’s appointment?
The problem is far larger than most people realize, and it’s becoming more serious every year.
Patients often assume that if they’re unable to get an appointment quickly, it’s simply because physicians are busy. While that’s certainly part of the issue, much of the delay comes from an outdated administrative process that hasn’t kept pace with modern healthcare.
Many practices still rely on manual scheduling, multiple phone lines, voicemail systems, paper-based workflows, and overworked front desk staff who are simultaneously answering phones, checking patients in, processing insurance, responding to physician requests, and managing countless other responsibilities.
From the patient’s perspective, that often means calling repeatedly, sitting on hold for extended periods, leaving messages that may not be returned until days later, or waiting weeks—or even months—for an available appointment.
Unfortunately, many patients simply give up. They delay preventive care, postpone treatment until symptoms worsen, or seek care in emergency departments for conditions that could have been managed much earlier in a physician’s office. That isn’t just frustrating—it increases healthcare costs and often leads to worse medical outcomes.
The challenge is being amplified by two powerful demographic trends. America is experiencing a growing shortage of physicians at precisely the same time our population is aging. Older adults naturally require more frequent medical care, while fewer physicians are available to meet that demand. Without smarter technology, the gap between healthcare demand and provider capacity will continue to widen.
The appointment itself isn’t the bottleneck.
Access is.
If we can dramatically improve access to care, we improve healthcare for everyone.
5) Administrative friction is often described as one of healthcare’s biggest hidden costs. Where do those costs accumulate?
Administrative friction touches virtually every participant in the healthcare system, yet it’s often invisible because it occurs in thousands of small interactions every single day.
Medical practices devote enormous resources to answering phones, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, collecting patient information, processing referrals, obtaining prior authorizations, managing paperwork, returning calls, confirming appointments, and coordinating follow-up care. These are all necessary functions, but they consume significant time and staffing resources that could otherwise be devoted to patient care.
Physicians also pay a price. Administrative responsibilities continue to grow, contributing to burnout and reducing the amount of time doctors can spend with patients. Many physicians entered medicine to care for people—not to manage paperwork.
Patients bear substantial costs as well. They lose time waiting on hold, taking time off work, traveling unnecessarily, repeating medical histories, completing redundant forms, and navigating disconnected healthcare systems. Delayed access often means delayed diagnosis, delayed treatment, and, in many cases, more complicated and expensive medical care.

6) Why do you believe patient access has become healthcare’s next major opportunity for AI?
Artificial intelligence has tremendous potential across every aspect of healthcare, including diagnostics, imaging, drug discovery, and clinical decision support. Those areas will continue to evolve rapidly over the next decade.
However, the greatest opportunity today is improving patient access because that’s where AI can have an immediate and measurable impact on millions of people without replacing physician judgment.
Healthcare is overwhelmed by administrative work. Scheduling appointments, collecting patient information, verifying insurance, coordinating referrals, managing follow-up care, answering routine questions, and communicating with patients consume an enormous amount of time. These are highly structured tasks that AI performs exceptionally well.
At the same time, America is facing two converging challenges: an aging population that requires more medical care and a growing shortage of physicians and healthcare workers. We simply cannot solve that imbalance by hiring more people alone. We need technology that allows physicians and their staff to care for more patients without increasing administrative burdens.
AI isn’t replacing physicians—it is multiplying their capacity.
By removing repetitive administrative tasks, physicians gain more time to focus on diagnosis, treatment, and building relationships with their patients. That’s where physicians create the greatest value.
In many ways, access is the front door to healthcare. It doesn’t matter how advanced medical science becomes if patients can’t efficiently enter the system. AI allows us to open that front door wider than ever before.

Our AI voice agent functions much like an exceptionally well-trained medical assistant who never sleeps.
When a patient requests an appointment through HealthLynked, the AI contacts the physician’s office, navigates automated phone systems, waits on hold when necessary, speaks naturally with office staff, identifies available appointment times, schedules the visit, confirms the details, and immediately updates the patient.
What makes the system particularly powerful is that the process doesn’t end with scheduling.
The AI can also onboard new patients before their appointment by collecting demographic information, insurance details, medications, allergies, past medical history, surgical history, family history, and current symptoms. 9) What were the greatest technical challenges?
Healthcare presents one of the most challenging communication environments imaginable.
Unlike a scripted customer service interaction, every medical office operates differently. Receptionists interrupt, ask unexpected questions, transfer calls, place callers on hold, change appointment availability, and often multitask while speaking.
Our AI had to learn how to maintain context throughout an unpredictable conversation while responding naturally in real time.
Healthcare also has an incredibly specialized vocabulary. Thousands of medication names, dosages, laboratory tests, procedures, medical abbreviations, specialty terminology, and physician names must all be recognized and interpreted with a very high degree of accuracy. Misunderstanding a medication or dosage isn’t simply inconvenient—it has the potential to affect patient care.
Equally important was teaching the AI to recognize its own limitations.
No AI should pretend to know something it doesn’t. When uncertainty arises or a conversation moves beyond predefined parameters, the system is designed to seamlessly transfer the interaction to a human team member. Knowing when to escalate is every bit as important as knowing how to automate.
Ultimately, our objective wasn’t to build an AI that sounds human. It was to build one that behaves responsibly, communicates naturally, understands healthcare accurately, and knows when human judgment is required.
10) How does serving both patients and practices change the dynamics?
Most healthcare technology companies focus on solving one side of the equation. They either build tools for patients or tools for physicians.
At HealthLynked, we recognized that the appointment is a shared experience. Improving only one side creates limited benefits. Improving both sides simultaneously creates a completely different outcome.
Patients want immediate access, convenient communication, shorter wait times, and a simple experience.

12) How do you measure AI performance?
We evaluate AI the same way we evaluate any member of a healthcare team—by measuring outcomes rather than simply activity.
Of course, we monitor operational metrics such as appointment completion rates, call duration, scheduling accuracy, first-call resolution, patient satisfaction, and practice satisfaction. Those are important indicators of efficiency.
But healthcare requires a much higher standard.
We also evaluate whether patients are being appropriately guided through the healthcare system. Is the AI helping patients receive recommended preventive screenings? Is it ensuring follow-up appointments are scheduled after hospitalization or surgery? Is it identifying patients who may require more urgent medical attention? Is it helping practices reduce missed appointments while improving continuity of care?
Those outcomes have a direct impact on both patient health and healthcare costs.
Just as important as measuring performance is recognizing limitations.
Artificial intelligence should never guess when uncertainty exists. Our systems are designed to recognize situations that require human judgment, whether that’s a clinically complex question, an emotionally distressed patient, an unusual scheduling issue, or simply a situation where the patient prefers speaking with a person.

13) How can AI reduce staffing pressures without replacing jobs?
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence is that it’s designed to replace people.
In healthcare, I believe the opposite is true.
The problem isn’t that we have too many administrative employees. The problem is that we’ve buried talented healthcare professionals under an overwhelming amount of repetitive administrative work.
Today’s front-desk teams spend much of their day answering the same questions, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, processing paperwork, confirming visits, managing referrals, returning phone calls, and performing countless routine tasks that consume hours every day.
Those responsibilities contribute directly to burnout, turnover, and staffing shortages.
AI allows us to redistribute that work.
Instead of replacing employees, it enables them to spend more time solving complex problems, helping patients with unique needs, coordinating care, and delivering the personal interactions that technology should never replace.
Healthcare is fundamentally a human profession. Compassion, empathy, reassurance, and clinical judgment cannot be automated.
What can be automated are the repetitive processes that prevent healthcare professionals from using those uniquely human skills.
As physician shortages continue to grow, we won’t be able to meet future demand simply by hiring more people. We have to increase the productivity of every physician, nurse, and administrative employee already caring for patients.

14) What does a successful patient interaction look like?
The best technology is often invisible.
From the patient’s perspective, success means they don’t have to think about the technology at all—they simply accomplish what they wanted to do.

One of the things we’ve learned is that patients don’t necessarily care whether AI is involved. They care about results.

If the answer is yes, patients generally embrace the technology because it solves real problems in their lives.

15) How do you build trust with older patients?
Trust isn’t built by telling people they’re speaking with artificial intelligence.
Trust is built by delivering a simple, reliable, and respectful experience.
One misconception is that older adults are resistant to AI. In reality, many aren’t looking for another smartphone app, another patient portal, or another password to remember. What they want is someone to answer the phone when they call their doctor’s office.
That’s exactly where conversational AI can make a tremendous difference.
Instead of navigating complicated menus or waiting on hold for extended periods, patients simply have a natural conversation. They ask questions, schedule appointments, receive assistance, and get the information they need—just as they always have.
For many older adults, that’s actually easier than learning a new digital application.
Equally important, patients should always have a choice. Technology should expand options, not eliminate them. Whenever a patient prefers speaking with a person—or the situation requires human judgment—that option remains available.
As a physician, I never want technology to become a barrier between patients and healthcare.
I want it to remove barriers.
When patients experience shorter wait times, faster access, better communication, and more personalized service, trust develops naturally. They don’t see AI as replacing their physician—they see it as helping them reach their physician more easily.
That’s exactly how we believe artificial intelligence should be used in healthcare.
16) How do you prioritize your roadmap?
Healthcare certainly doesn’t suffer from a shortage of problems to solve. Every day we identify dozens of opportunities where technology could improve efficiency or enhance the patient experience. The real challenge isn’t finding ideas—it’s deciding which ones will have the greatest impact.
Our roadmap is guided by three questions.
First, does it meaningfully improve patient care or patient access?
Second, does it reduce the administrative burden placed on physicians and healthcare staff?
Third, does it move us closer to a connected healthcare ecosystem where patients, providers, and artificial intelligence work together seamlessly?
If the answer to those questions is yes, then it’s likely something worth building.
As a practicing physician, I also have the advantage of testing ideas against real-world clinical workflows. Healthcare technology often fails because it’s designed by people who understand software but don’t fully understand medicine. A solution may look impressive in a conference room but create additional work inside a busy medical practice.
Our goal has never been to build isolated products. We’re building an integrated AI platform that supports the entire patient journey—from finding a physician and scheduling an appointment to patient intake, care management, preventive care, chronic disease management, telemedicine, remote monitoring, and ongoing patient engagement.
Every feature we develop should make the next feature even more valuable. Over time, those individual capabilities become an intelligent healthcare operating system that continuously improves both the patient and provider experience.
That’s the long-term vision guiding every decision we make.
17) What lessons have you learned?
Healthcare is unlike almost any other industry because innovation isn’t measured simply by how quickly you can introduce new technology. It’s measured by whether that technology earns the trust of physicians, patients, hospitals, regulators, and payers while improving clinical outcomes.
I’ve learned that healthcare moves deliberately for good reason. People’s lives depend on getting it right.
One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is assuming healthcare is primarily a technology problem. It isn’t. It’s a workflow problem, a communication problem, and often a human behavior problem. If your technology doesn’t fit naturally into existing clinical workflows or reduce work for healthcare professionals, adoption will be difficult regardless of how innovative it may be.
Another lesson is that credibility matters enormously. As physicians, we don’t adopt technology because it’s new—we adopt it because it improves patient care. Every product must demonstrate measurable value.
I’d also encourage entrepreneurs to spend time inside physician offices, hospitals, and clinics before writing a single line of code. Observe how healthcare actually operates. Talk to physicians, nurses, front-desk staff, care coordinators, and most importantly, patients. The best ideas usually emerge from understanding everyday frustrations rather than chasing the latest technological trend.
Artificial intelligence is an extraordinary tool, but it isn’t the destination. The destination is better healthcare.
Companies that remain focused on solving meaningful problems rather than simply showcasing AI will create the greatest long-term value.
18) Which administrative areas are next for automation?
I believe we’re only at the beginning of what artificial intelligence will accomplish in healthcare administration.
Today, most discussions focus on appointment scheduling because it’s highly visible, but scheduling is only one piece of a much larger opportunity.
Over the next several years, we’ll see widespread automation of patient registration, insurance verification, prior authorizations, referral coordination, prescription renewals, patient intake, documentation support, preventive care reminders, chronic disease follow-up, population health outreach, care management, and routine patient communications.
One particularly exciting area is care coordination.
Patients today often see multiple physicians, specialists, laboratories, imaging centers, pharmacies, and hospitals, yet those organizations rarely communicate effectively with one another. AI can act as the coordinator that ensures patients receive appropriate follow-up care, complete recommended screenings, adhere to medications, and don’t fall through the cracks between providers.
We’ll also see AI helping practices identify patients who are overdue for preventive care, monitor quality metrics, assist with value-based care initiatives, and proactively engage patients before small health problems become major medical events.
Ultimately, I believe administrative healthcare will become largely autonomous.
The repetitive work that consumes thousands of hours every day will increasingly be handled by intelligent systems, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on patient care rather than paperwork.
That’s not simply an efficiency improvement—it’s a fundamental redesign of how healthcare operates.

I believe the next five years will represent one of the most significant transformations in healthcare since the adoption of electronic medical records.
Healthcare is shifting from being reactive to becoming continuous and proactive.
Rather than interacting with the healthcare system only when they’re sick, patients will increasingly have intelligent AI assistants helping them manage their health every day.
These systems will schedule appointments automatically, coordinate specialist referrals, monitor chronic conditions, remind patients about medications, answer routine medical questions, arrange preventive screenings, coordinate follow-up care after hospitalizations, and help patients navigate increasingly complex healthcare systems.
At the same time, much more healthcare will move into the home.
Telemedicine will continue to expand dramatically, allowing patients to consult physicians without unnecessary travel. Home laboratory testing will become increasingly common. Remote patient monitoring devices will continuously transmit information such as blood pressure, glucose levels, cardiac rhythms, oxygen saturation, weight, and activity levels directly to healthcare providers. Artificial intelligence will analyze those data streams in real time, identifying concerning trends long before they become medical emergencies.
Instead of waiting for patients to become sick, healthcare will increasingly anticipate problems before they occur.
I also believe we’ll see a profound shift in how medical information is used. Patients will have greater ownership of their health records, allowing AI to create highly personalized healthcare guidance based on an individual’s medical history, genetics, medications, lifestyle, and ongoing health data.
The relationship between patients and physicians will become stronger—not weaker—because physicians will spend less time managing administrative work and more time practicing medicine.

20) What should healthcare leaders do today?
My advice is simple: don’t think of artificial intelligence as another piece of software. Think of it as the newest member of your healthcare team.
The organizations that will succeed over the next decade won’t necessarily be those with the largest budgets or the most advanced technology. They’ll be the ones that thoughtfully redesign their workflows around intelligent automation while keeping patients at the center of every decision.
Start by identifying the repetitive administrative tasks that consume your staff’s time every day. Ask yourself which activities truly require human judgment and which could be handled safely and consistently by AI.
You’ll probably discover that your employees aren’t spending most of their day caring for patients—they’re answering phones, scheduling appointments, collecting information, processing paperwork, and performing countless repetitive tasks that technology can now manage exceptionally well.
By allowing AI to assume those responsibilities, physicians and staff can focus on what only humans can provide: compassion, empathy, clinical judgment, education, and trusted relationships with patients.
The organizations that embrace AI thoughtfully today will improve patient satisfaction, reduce operating costs, increase access to care, alleviate staff burnout, and better position themselves for the transition toward value-based healthcare.
I also encourage healthcare leaders to think beyond their own organizations. The future of healthcare isn’t about individual practices operating independently. It’s about creating a connected ecosystem where patients control their health information, providers collaborate more effectively, and artificial intelligence helps coordinate care across the entire healthcare continuum.
I often say that the future of healthcare won’t be defined solely by better medicine. It will be defined by better access to medicine, better information, and better coordination of care.
Artificial intelligence is the technology that makes that future possible.
