LiTime Unveils LiHeat™: A Dual-Mode Approach to Solving Cold-Weather Lithium Battery Charging Challenges
Lithium batteries have long struggled in cold environments. When temperatures fall below freezing, most lithium battery systems restrict charging to prevent internal damage — a limitation that continues to affect applications ranging from RV travel and off-grid solar systems to winter outdoor activities.
As demand for reliable energy storage in extreme climates continues to grow, manufacturers are increasingly exploring new ways to address this challenge.
LiTime, known for its focus on lithium battery solutions for outdoor and off-grid applications, has introduced LiHeat™, a patented dual-mode self-heating technology designed to improve charging performance and operational reliability in sub-zero conditions.
Rethinking Battery Heating in Cold Environments
Conventional self-heating battery systems typically rely on a single method — plug-in heating — where external power is used to warm battery cells before charging can begin. While effective, this approach often introduces delays, particularly in time-sensitive or energy-limited scenarios.
LiHeat™ builds on this concept by incorporating a second heating pathway: self-powered heating. In this mode, the battery uses its own stored energy to raise cell temperature before being connected to an external charger. Once connected, charging can begin immediately, eliminating the need for a prolonged warm-up phase.
The system also supports automatic switching between heating modes. If internal heating alone is insufficient, it transitions to external (plug-in) heating to ensure the battery reaches a safe charging temperature.
Together, these capabilities represent a shift from passive heating to intelligent thermal management — setting a new direction for cold-weather lithium battery charging.
Pre-Heating Before Charging Helps Reduce Delays and Energy Loss
Through the LiTime Bluetooth app, users can remotely activate the self-heating function when ambient temperatures are above -20°C and the battery’s state of charge exceeds 20%. This allows the battery to warm up in advance, enabling charging to begin immediately once a power source is connected.
This feature can be particularly valuable in winter solar applications. On cold mornings, solar panels may begin generating power while batteries are still below their charging threshold. By reaching a chargeable state earlier, batteries equipped with LiHeat™ can help ensure that available solar energy is captured rather than lost due to temperature limitations.
Supporting Stable Performance in Low Temperatures
Beyond charging efficiency, maintaining a stable operating temperature is essential for consistent battery performance. Low temperatures can negatively impact discharge rates and overall output stability.
LiHeat™ integrates with a Bluetooth-enabled battery management system (BMS), allowing users to monitor temperature in real time and control heating functions remotely. By keeping cells within an optimal temperature range, the system is designed to support more stable output even in freezing conditions.
Expanding Use Cases for Cold-Climate Energy Storage
LiTime has begun integrating LiHeat™ technology into several lithium battery models in its self-heating battery lineup, including:
- 12V 100Ah Group24 Self-Heating Battery
- 12V 165Ah Self-Heating Battery
- 12V 320Ah Mini Self-Heating Battery
- 24V 230Ah Self-Heating Battery
These products are aimed at applications such as winter RV usage, off-grid systems, and outdoor expeditions.
As energy storage adoption expands into colder and more demanding environments, solutions that address temperature-related performance limitations are becoming increasingly important.
LiTime’s introduction of LiHeat™ reflects a broader industry trend toward more intelligent and flexible battery thermal management systems designed for real-world conditions
