Is your growth on Instagram stalled? Do you post great content on a regular basis, but still do your follower counts continue to stay the same?
If so, check out these 8 techniques to get popular on Instagram faster than you think!
1. Collaborate with another Instagram user in your niche
Reach out to Instagram users who already have a following in your niche or industry to propose mutual promotion. For this to work, you need to find users who have a similar sized audience to yours, as well as a similar or complementary target audience.
Some ways to use this strategy:
- Organize a “takeover” – where everyone takes over the other’s account for one day
- Share your partner’s posts
- Co-host a reciprocal “tagging” contest in your posts
Remember, your goal in this strategy is to build your own audience, so make sure you offer your best content in order to attract as many followers as possible!
2. Use popular and trending hashtags
You probably already know how important hashtags are for your Instagram marketing. If you are not aware of it, it may be useful to read this post first! In short, using hashtags on Instagram allows people outside your current follower group to find and follow you.
There are three main strategies for using hashtags to get more followers on Instagram:
- Use popular hashtags that your target audience is already using. This will help you gain much more targeted followers. This is the strategy I recommend if you want highly profiled followers!
- Uses extremely popular hashtags that are searched most often (e.g. #love, #fotooftheday, etc.)
- Use hashtags designed to get “likes” and followers (eg. “Like4like”, “follow4follow”). Use this strategy sparingly, as the quality of these followers will likely not be the best!

3. Use an optimal number of hashtags
What is the optimal number of hashtags to use? It is generally recommended to use 2 to 30 hashtags per post; however, the most recent research seems to indicate that 8 hashtags are the perfect number for increasing “likes” – which can ultimately lead to greater reach and more followers. If 8 hashtags seem like an adequate number, I suggest you start using them starting with a smaller number of hashtags and then gradually increase them to see for which number your posts are more successful.
QUICK TIP… make a list of your hashtags on your phone, perhaps even dividing them into two or three lists, so you don’t have to “remember” them when you go to publish a post on Instagram. This will make it easier to “cut and paste” into your Instagram post.
4. Embed Instagram posts on your blog
A great way to entice your website visitors to follow you on Instagram is to embed your Instagram posts on your website or blog. This allows your visitors to see and interact with your post directly on your page. By clicking on the post’s Instagram logo, they will be taken to Instagram where they can also see your other content… and potentially follow you.
NOTE: Embedding cannot be activated if your Instagram account is set to private. If you want to share posts on your site, be sure to set these posts as public!
5. Try posting on Instagram once or twice a day
Recent research seems to suggest that posting at least once or twice a day is optimal for increasing reach, likes and shares – and therefore also followers. Of course it should be remembered that these results are based on average values - some accounts will be successful posting more than 10 times a day, while others will get better results posting 2-3 times a month!
Here’s a simple experiment you can do to find out what works best for your posts. Start posting once a day and keep track of how many interactions you get for each post and the eventual increase in followers. Gradually increase the number of posts, trying different publication frequencies, until you find the one that gives the best results and that is compatible with your time needs and your availability!
6. Like other people’s photos
Like other people’s photos is one of the best ways to get more followers on Instagram. You can also get those likes via buy Instagram likes. The key to using this strategy successfully is to like photos of people who belong to your target market – rather than just expressing liking to photos of randomly chosen people.
7. Run a contest on Instagram
Contests on Instagram are a great way to increase your visibility and reach, since your followers can tag their friends to let them know about the contest. In fact, research done by Tailwind found that accounts that use Instagram contests manage to grow their followers on average 70% faster than those who don’t!
Some of the strategies you can use to get the most out of your contests:
- Require entrants to follow your account to be eligible for the contest
- Ask contest entrants to post their own photos by adding your brand name as a hashtag
- Remind participants to like the post with which you announce the contest
Of course, make sure you follow the official rules of Instagram contests so that this initiative doesn’t become counterproductive for you!
8. Leverage other social media connections
Don’t forget to let your current fans, followers and email contacts know about your Instagram presence! Use an Instagram badge or the Follow button on your site and ask your contacts and fans to follow you on Instagram.
Share popular and interesting posts with your mailing list, your Facebook page & fans and blog readers, and ask for contributions, feedback or comments. In this way you have also chance to increase Facebook Likes and more engagement your content on other platform. You should also clarify why people should follow you on Instagram. For example, “Follow us to be informed of special offers” or “Follow us to discover new contests or promotions”.
