8 Easy Hacks for Packing Up Your Electronics Before a Move

Packing up your electronics can be an overwhelming task. Whether you’re moving or reorganizing, it’s essential to ensure that your most valued equipment is safe and secure. And if you want to avoid making multiple trips back and forth from the new location, pack any small components in a ziplock bag so they stay together.

1. Wrap Your Electronics

Electronics should be wrapped twice before being put into a box to ensure they are safe. Most electronics should be wrapped in bubble wrap and placed inside a labeled cardboard box. Label the boxes fragile to ensure that one will handle them responsibly.

2. Use Suitable Packing Materials for Delicate Electronics

Computers and televisions are especially susceptible to damage, so it’s best to use suitable packing materials for these items, such as bubble wrap, soft paper, and foam peanuts. Heavy-duty cardboard boxes can also do more harm than good if you don’t use enough padding materials. It is why it’s important to only move electronics in packages specifically designed for them.

3. Use the Correct Box

Changing your box size can make a big difference when packing up electronics. If you need help determining which size will be best, take the object’s size and add 2 inches to each side, both front to back and side to side. It will give you enough room to pack the item safely with padding materials all around it.

4. Label All Your Boxes Properly

Labeling every box is vital for every type of mover, including those with fragile electronics. It’s best to write the contents of the box in a permanent marker on the outside, as well as any reason for moving or precautions for packing. You can also keep an electronic inventory list inside every package.

5. Pack Electronics in a Way That Feels Natural to You

The best way to pack up electronics is to do it the same way you pack your clothes and other personal items. Even manufacturers make packing materials for techies when they need to make them fit everybody’s style. Try folding the cables and wires back on themselves instead of taping them down with rubber bands and keeping them out of all your other boxy items.

6. Protect Fragile Items with Padding Material

Use a padded material to wrap up your fragile items. Items like laptops, televisions, and speakers should be placed into a box alone and surrounded by at least two inches of loose padding on all sides of the object. A good option for packing things is to place as much soft paper as possible around them and then put more padding on top once the box is sealed shut.

7. Make Sure Your Sensitive Items are Packed Away Safely

Laptops and cell phones are tech items that are very likely to get stolen if you’re moving or have any parties or other get-togethers while you’re unpacking. To keep your electronics safe, make an effort to put those items away in a safe place, like a locked closet or another room. Allied Van Lines recommends using a locking safe to keep your valuables secure.

8. Keep Components Together Using Ziplock Bags

If there is more than one component for one electronic, make sure that they stay together by putting each of them in its plastic bag before boxing them up. Make sure the bags are well labeled, so nothing gets lost.

Electronics are one of the essential items to pack up before preparing for a move. If you take the time to pack them properly, they can avoid getting damaged in transit and putting people at risk instead of being kept safe. Taking the time to do this right can make all the difference when trying to keep things safe during a move.
