Winterizing Your Farm Equipment

 

Every prairie producer knows how fast the season turns. One week you are wrapping up harvest in shirtsleeves; the next there is frost on the auger flighting and the forecast is talking about minus twenty with a wind. Equipment that ran flawlessly through a warm October can become a no-start headache by December if it was simply parked and forgotten. Winterizing is not glamorous work, but an afternoon spent now usually saves a frustrating morning — or a costly repair bill — later. Here is a practical, field-tested checklist built for the realities of an Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba winter.

Start with the fuel system

Diesel and cold do not get along. As temperatures drop, the paraffin wax naturally present in fuel begins to crystallize and can gel in lines and filters, leaving you stranded on the coldest possible day. Before hard freeze-up, make the switch to a proper winter blend from your supplier, and consider an anti-gel or cold-flow additive for equipment that will see the deep cold. Just as important is water: condensation collects in partly empty tanks, and water in the fuel freezes and corrodes. Two habits help here — keep tanks topped up over winter to reduce the air space where moisture forms, and drain your water separators before storage. If a machine is going down for months, treating the fuel with a stabilizer keeps it from breaking down while it sits.

Do not skip the fluids and filters

Cold weather is unforgiving to tired fluids. If a tractor or combine is close to an oil change interval, do it before storage rather than after — fresh oil means fewer acids and less moisture sitting in the crankcase all winter. Have your coolant tested so you know it will actually protect to the temperatures you expect; a weak antifreeze mix that is fine in fall can leave you exposed in a January cold snap. Check hydraulic fluid condition and top up as needed, and if you run equipment with a DEF system, remember that diesel exhaust fluid freezes and should be managed according to the manual. This is also the time to think about winter-weight lubricants and greases that stay workable when it is cold; regional distributors and specialty lubricants and additive suppliers can point you to products rated for prairie conditions rather than something formulated for a milder climate.

Batteries and cold-start hardware

A battery that turns over an engine easily in September can lose a meaningful share of its cranking power in bitter cold, and a marginal battery will simply give up on you. Load-test batteries before winter, clean and protect the terminals, and keep them fully charged — a battery on a maintainer, or pulled and stored somewhere warmer, will thank you in spring. Then look at your cold-start gear: block heaters, coolant heaters and glow plugs are what make a diesel start at all when it is truly cold. Confirm the block heater actually draws current and that the cord and plug are not cracked or corroded. Many producers run their heaters on a timer so the engine is warm without paying to heat it all night. It is worth walking the yard and checking every heater cord now, while your fingers still work.

Tires, tracks and running gear

Rubber gets stiff and brittle in the cold, and air pressure drops as the mercury falls, so check and set pressures for winter. A few points to work through before machines go still for the season:

  • Clean mud, chaff and manure off tires and tracks before it freezes into a solid mass that is miserable to remove and hard on components.
  • For anything parked long-term, set tires a little firmer and, if you can, move the machine occasionally to avoid flat spots.
  • Inspect rubber tracks and undercarriage for cracks and wear; cold makes existing damage worse.
  • Grease every zerk on the running gear so bearings and pivots are protected through storage.
  • If you use tire chains for winter feeding or yard work, check them over and have them ready before the first real snow.

Where and how you park it

Shelter matters, but so does how you put a machine to bed. Indoors is ideal for combines, seeding equipment and anything with sensitive electronics; if that is not an option, park with the prevailing wind at the back and cover exposed openings. Retract hydraulic cylinders where you can so exposed rods do not pit and corrode. Rodents are a genuine winter threat — they chew wiring and nest in cabs and headers — so bait or block off entry points and think twice before leaving grain residue in a machine. Close up intakes and exhausts against snow and pests, but leave enough ventilation to prevent condensation. A quick wash to get corrosive dust and fertilizer residue off painted surfaces rounds out the job.

A little planning goes a long way

The producers who dread spring least are usually the ones who did the boring work in the fall. Make a written list for each major machine, note the parts and fluids you are short on, and line up what you need before the yard is buried in snow and everyone is competing for the same filters. If you find yourself hunting for a source of winter-grade product, a heater element or a service shop that will come out to the farm, a broad agri-business supplier directory can be a faster starting point than a cold web search. Winter on the prairies is long, but equipment that was put away with care tends to fire up on the first try — and that is worth an afternoon in October.
