Microsoft mentioned it almost in passing during an earnings call, the way a company mentions a milestone it expected to hit eventually. A few weeks later, StatCounter’s numbers backed it up in a more visible way: Windows 11 jumped from roughly 62% of the desktop Windows base in January to over 72% by the end of February — a swing that would have looked implausible twelve months earlier, when the operating system had spent years stuck below 30%.

The trigger is obvious in hindsight. Windows 10 lost standard support on October 14, 2025, and for a lot of people, that deadline did what four years of marketing couldn’t: it forced a decision. By mid-2026, Windows 11 had settled somewhere around 70% of the global desktop Windows install base, depending on which week you check, with Windows 10 sliding toward the high-20s. Enterprise migration is running noticeably behind consumer adoption, which is where this story stops being a headline and starts being a real operational question for a lot of small and mid-sized businesses.

The Gap Between “Everyone’s Moving” and “We’ve Moved”

Here’s the uncomfortable part of those adoption numbers: a large chunk of that 70%+ share isn’t coming from businesses making a planned, orderly transition. It’s coming from consumers buying new PCs, since virtually everything shipping today comes with Windows 11 preinstalled. For these, the upgrade path is mostly about timing and testing — making sure line-of-business software plays nicely with Windows 11 before rolling it out broadly, not whether the hardware can handle it.

The second group is the harder conversation: machines that fail the requirement outright, usually on CPU generation or missing TPM support, but are otherwise in good working condition. Replacing all of them at once is rarely realistic for a smaller business, and it’s not always necessary either. Knowing exactly which machines pass, which fail, and why — TPM, CPU generation, or both — turns a vague “we need to upgrade eventually” into a concrete, budgetable plan with a real timeline attached to it. Everything else in this transition gets easier once that’s actually mapped out, rather than discovered machine by machine as problems show up.

Windows 11 crossing a billion users is a headline. What businesses do with the machines still sitting on the other side of that number is the part that actually matters for the rest of the year.
