What is SEO? – Simply Explained!


SEO is very important as Google is an integral part of our lives today. Have you ever asked someone something and they answered by saying: “Google it”? Of course, you have. In fact, we ask Google more than we think we do. Regardless of what we ask, Google usually has an answer. Have you ever wondered why there is always an answer? Why is there always an article that you can click on and find the answers inside? 

If not then, I will try to explain it to you in the simplest way possible.

What does SEO mean?

According to Wikipedia, “Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of growing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine.”

So I would call Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as the modern way of marketing. Therefore, if you have a business and you have a website, you want to rank a webpage of that website as high as possible on Google. So, you have to optimize your webpage to make it reach a high position in Google or other search engines’ search results. Therefore when people google something, your webpage is very visible and comes on top.

According to Ahrefs, seven main things affect a web page’s rankings and engine visibility: 

  1. Crawlability
  2. Mobile-friendliness 
  3. Pagespeed
  4. Search intent
  5. Backlinks
  6. Authority
  7. Content quality

I am going to elaborate more on why you should pay more attention to content, as it has been proved that content is probably the most important factor when wanting to rank higher.

Why is content so relevant?

Here’s how it works: Google, or maybe another engine you are using, has a crawler that goes out and accumulates information about all the content they can find on the Internet. The crawlers build an index by carrying all those 1s and 0s back to the search engine. That index is then fed through an algorithm that tries to match all that data with your query. 

The reason why I am speaking about Google is that Google has a market share of ~92%. That’s why you should optimize your website for Google instead of Bing, DuckDuckGo, or other web search engines.

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, people ask something because they are looking for answers that could be their solution to whatever problem they might have. That’s why your website must have high-quality content. On top of that, the content must be SEO friendly.

Keyword research is crucial as you must know the most searched keywords on the Internet, so you can use them on your content. 

According to Ahrefs, Google ranks the most reliable and useful results. To do this, Google looks at the three things your content has: Expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness.

Also, it is essential to make sure you pick the right format for writing content. Ahrefs says that you have to look at top-ranking pages and identify the three C’s of search intent: 

  1. Content-type – What are most of the results? Blog posts, landing pages, product pages, or something else?
  2. Content format – What is Google ranking mostly? How-to guides, opinion pieces, list-style articles, or something else.
  3. Content angle – Is there a unique selling point across the top-ranking pages?

It is crucial to check these three C’s, identify which ones are ranking higher, and write an article of that style.


Ranking high on Google and being visible is very important. On average, Google has 5.8 billion searches daily worldwide, so it is a must for any web page to rank high. Paying attention to factors such as backlinks, “authority,” and matching search intent is critical as they have been vital for many years. Search engine algorithms change all the time, but these three factors have been consistent over the years, and they are not going anywhere.
