Australia’s National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) has quickly become the most talked-about route to permanent residency for exceptional talent. To understand who really qualifies – and how to win – we spoke with Divya Mutneja, co-founder of Voyager Compass Consultancy LLP and one of the most experienced voices in Australia migration.
Q: In simple terms, what makes the National Innovation Visa different?
“It’s a mindset shift. Traditional visas ask, ‘How many points do you have?’ The 858 asks, ‘What have you built?’ There’s no points test, no occupation list, no age cap. Australia is looking for recognised achievement in priority sectors – critical technologies, health, renewables, education. It’s direct permanent residency for the right profile.”
Q: You often say this visa isn’t for everyone. Why?
“Because honesty protects the client. If someone doesn’t have the evidence – the experiance, leadership, patents, publications, grants, funding, or genuine sector impact – no application strategy will manufacture it. My first job is to assess whether the profile realistically meets the ‘exceptional and outstanding achievement’ threshold. If it doesn’t, I say so.”
Q: Once someone qualifies, what determines how fast their case moves?
“Priority. There are four groups. Priority 1 is for global award winners. Priority 2 is for anyone nominated by a government agency on Form 1000 – that’s the real accelerator. Priority 3 covers Tier One sector leaders, and Priority 4 covers Tier Two sectors. Much of our strategic work is about positioning a candidate correctly and, where possible, securing a nomination that lifts them into Priority 2.”
Q: Why are so many Indian professionals pursuing this route now?
“Because India is producing world-class founders, researchers, and technologists, and India has become a leading source country for this visa. The impact is already there. The gap is usually presentation – translating Indian awards, traction, and research into evidence an Australian assessor can verify. That’s what we do.”

“Get an honest assessment first. Understand your priority group. Build your evidence like a case, not a form.
