Versatility, Leadership and Focus: Michal Gembcik on the Key Principles of Becoming a Successful SAP Architect

Recently, SAP announced the finalists of the SAP Innovation Awards. Over 150 entries were reviewed to determine companies that garnered the most prominent success in applying SAP tools and solutions to real-world problems. The scale of the award that celebrated 30 winners in multiple categories, such as Industry Leadership, Sustainability and Transformation, illustrates the role SAP places on a global scale and across various sectors, from energetics to automotive industry. To become a successful SAP integrator, one needs to possess a wide array of skills including an in-depth understanding of the ERP system itself as well as specifics of a certain industry. Moreover, one needs to be versatile and able to rapidly grasp the core aspects of a new area of work. The career of Michal Gembcik is a vivid illustration of applying these qualities in practice.

Having worked for major energy companies and institutions in Slovakia such as Slovak electricity provider SEPS, the nuclear giant VUJE and Slovak gas and electricity provider SPP, Michal Gembcik, an SAP solutions architect and BI consultant accumulating more than a decade of experience, underlines the importance of SAP solutions in sectors like the energy industry, tax collection, automotive industry and more. His career presents a valuable example and inspiration for anyone who plans to achieve success as a SAP architect or administrator.

Branching Out into Multiple Industries

There are many industries that can benefit from SAP solutions, and this is the reason why the ability to quickly acquire an understanding of a certain sector or business to spot development opportunities is essential for a SAP expert of any level. For instance, the world of finance and tax increasingly needs well trained professionals to enhance their systems and methods, as tax authorities are struggling to ensure tax compliance. In fact, as the OECD stated, to face the current situation, “tax administrations are adopting digital tools to increase their efficiency.”

Michal Gembcik spotted this niche and, since 2017, has collaborated with the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic, where he has led projects concerning the implementation of a National Tax and Toll System. He has as well contributed to the development of the Central Consolidation System of the country by means of data architecture. It is difficult to think of the future of tax collection without proper management of ERP systems. Helping to build a more efficient future in the field of tax collection and execution, from 2013 to 2015 and in 2021, Michal Gembcik was part of an SAP project that completely transformed Slovakia’s tax system.

Learning Continuously

Achieving the combination of versatility with a focused approach, necessary to find the weaknesses of a sector and develop a solution for them could not be possible without proper training and education. Michal Gembcik has broad and extensive training in a large range of sectors. This well-consolidated knowledge laid the foundations of success in his career. He devoted his student years to the field of Finance, Banking and Investments during his bachelor’s degree, to later complement his studies with a Master’s of Engineering, specializing in IT and Management. Moreover, he currently has five different certifications as an SAP consultant. This foundation allows him to build efficient and robust solutions, no matter to what particular sector the project belongs.

His experience is not limited to the aforementioned work for energy companies and for the tax office. From 2015 to 2024 Michal Gembcik worked with Volkswagen Slovakia, ensuring the correct functioning of their production plant by delivering SAP solutions in the period when the automotive industry was going through a significant transformation. This plant he developed a SAP solution for manufactured high-profile automotive vehicles, thus needing accurate and systematized data processing.

Developing A Wide Array of Skills 

The career path of Michal Gembcik is not only a testament of his unique skills. It also provides a vivid example of why diversifying one’s skills is important. A wider range of skills helps unlock new synergies.  In other words, by looking at something from different perspectives, one can discover new ways to optimize resources and come up with innovative ideas.

Following this approach, Michal Gembick started as an Accounting Analyst at IBM and later went on to focus on SAP consulting and Business Intelligence in a wide variety of fields ranging from finance, tax management and energy to the automotive sector. This has given him a broad market perspective, which allowed him to eventually become a CEO of his own company, CMG TECH. Another of his current priorities is his position as a Chief Architect with his contract partner Aiten, having successfully contributed to the growth of their general revenues. Moreover, Michal Gembick does not focus solely on business goals. He ventures in the academic field as well. Currently, he is preparing two scientific publications and has repeatedly supported his partner AITEN at various conferences in Slovakia.

Becoming an Efficient Leader  

In addition to his diverse skill set and deep understanding of the SAP technology, Michal Gembick possesses leadership skills which are necessary for success on the scale he currently works at. Throughout his career, he demonstrated those skills multiple times by organizing an efficient teamwork, creating and supporting a productive environment. Now he brings it to the next level, managing his company, CMG TECH, which is growing steadily. His leadership qualities helped him to expand his business to an international sphere, more specifically in the USA.

By combining his different skills and experience, Michal Gembcik has established himself as an expert in his field, having worked for the biggest companies and institutions of Slovakia. His story can provide an insightful example for those who strive to build his career in developing and managing SAP integrations.
