Please tell us more about yourself and what inspired you to start Smarter AI?
I’m Chris Piche and I founded Smarter AI to transform CCTV cameras with AI.
I have a background in P2P, streaming, and computer vision technologies. I started college early, at age 12, and I was involved in public ICT policy, representing Canada in the APEC ICT Forum. Before founding Smarter AI, I developed connected video services including AT&T Video, BlackBerry OS, and Poly Video.
I was inspired to found Smarter AI by the opportunity to reinvent public safety with AI cameras.

What are the limitations of legacy CCTV cameras, how is AI resolving these and what is the global market size?
Legacy CCTV cameras have constrained features (record and play video), use cases (security / surveillance), and form factors (security cameras).
Because they can be programmed to detect objects, people, and actions, AI cameras support many new form factors and use cases, including bio thermal cameras, bodycams, and dashcams for public safety, smart cities, and transportation.
Legacy CCTV cameras are a $40B annual market, and the opportunity for AI cameras is an order of magnitude bigger.
AI technologies are transforming transportation; what roles do AI dashcams play and what difference are you making?
The benefits of driver assistance systems (such as Tesla Autopilot) are well documented. However, one drawback of driver assistance is the growing problem of driver complacency and distraction.
Together with our AI Store models and developers, Smarter AI Dashcams enable precision AI for safer transportation, including detecting complacent and distracted drivers.
Senators Ed Markey, Richard Blumenthal, and Amy Klobuchar recently introduced the SAFE Act of 2021 to combat the problem of driver complacency and distraction. The SAFE Act will direct the Department of Transportation to standardize and require carmakers to install driver-monitoring systems, such as those enabled by Smarter AI Dashcams, which detect and prevent complacent and distracted behaviors such as texting while driving.
Did the coronavirus pandemic create more demand for products like thermal cameras? How does this work?
Yes, 2020 accelerated demand for public safety solutions, including our Smarter AI Bio Thermal Cameras, which enable mass temperature screening, social distancing, and contact tracing for safe reopening.
Early on, many facility operators measured customer temperatures with legacy temperature guns. However these are susceptible to ambient conditions and not reliable. But our Smarter AI Bio Thermal Cameras take a precision approach with thermal and optical sensor fusion for trusted measurements and decisions.
Furthermore, because of their optical sensors, our Smarter AI Bio Thermal Cameras can also detect telltale signs of infection, such as coughing and sneezing, and mitigate transmission by enforcing mask and safe social distancing policies and enabling contact tracing.
