Here, John Benevento explains all the gear you’ll need to prepare to surf the summer fully.
Surfboard
You’ll need to get a surfboard that makes sense for your body, experience level, and the type of waves you’ll face in your area. Hit up your local surf shop–they’ll be able to chat with you and help you find the perfect board to get you started right. According to John Benevento, while you can order a board online, it’s important to talk with someone to help you find the right board for your needs.
Fins
The fins on your surfboard improve the performance and stability of your ride. When you’re at the surf shop, chat with them about what type of fin(s) are the best fit to get you started on your board.
Leash
The last thing you want is to watch your surfboard float away after you wipe out on a tough wave. Your leash keeps you connected to your surfboard, so you can always get back up and keep moving.
Surf Wax
According to John Benevento, you’ll need some help getting your hands and feet to stay steady on your board. Surf wax will help you get the traction you need in the water to stand up and stay put (even though it’ll take more than a few tries until you feel steady on your board).
Wetsuit
Unless you’re lucky enough to live in tropical waters, the ocean will feel chilly at the beginning of the summer. Your wetsuit will protect you from the elements, allowing you to put in the hours you need to hone your craft while keeping you warm. When you stop into your surf shop, they’ll talk with you about the difference between a spring suit and a full suit, and you’ll be able to figure out which option is the best fit for your climate.
Rash Guard
