The Rising Cost Of Fuel And How To Save Money On Travel

If you own a car then you’ll probably be aware of the recent hike in fuel prices. Over the past 12 months, a liter of fuel has jumped from £1.14p per liter in January 2021 to over £1.50p per liter with no signs of slowing down. This significant rise in the price of fuel is having a direct impact on people’s motoring and travel expenses, hitting low earners the most; for example, the cost of filling a 55-liter family car with unleaded petrol is now £83 or £85 for diesel.

The recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine is set to drive the cost of fuel even further and as a result, many people are now considering alternate forms of transport. Although switching to public transport, walking, or cycling may at first seem a nuisance, there are several benefits to making the switch. If you are considering leaving the car at home and finding another way of transport then have a look at some of the options below!

Hopping on the train

A great way to get around, especially if you are going to cities, is catching the train. The UK has an extensive rail system that links up the entire country, so getting to your destination is never going to be too difficult. Another benefit of choosing the train is that you don’t have to take into consideration road congestion or parking fees, which can be both time-consuming and costly in bigger cities. It is highly recommended to avoid using the car and research train times to London if wanting to visit the Capital or any other major cities in the UK.

Opting to cycle

Cycling is a great alternative to traveling by car! Although it’s not quite as convenient, if you could switch the weekly commute to cycling 3x per week, you won’t just save a pretty penny, you’ll do wonders for your health. Cycling has been proven to improve cardio-vascular and aerobic fitness, lower blood pressure, boost energy and build muscle. Beyond the physical benefits, cycling also makes you happier, reducing stress and even alleviates symptoms of depression. Most companies also offer a bike-to-work scheme, so if you are considering taking up cycling, make sure you take advantage of the benefits available.

Walking

Although it’s not the fastest way of getting from A to B, it’s one of the most enjoyable and will make it a lot easier to get in those 10,000 steps. Walking also offers many of the same health benefits associated with cycling, so why not try walking to the shop instead of driving.
