Leading Innovations in Artificial Intelligence
With Nambiar’s assistance, Google has developed the transformers architecture, a paradigm shift for AI and natural language processing (NLP).
“”I had the rare chance of witnessing history in the making,” shares Nambiar. “One of the most memorable aspects of my journey was the opportunity to work under the guidance of Ray Kurzweil, a renowned author and computer scientist.”
As Nambiar’s skip manager, Kurzwell has supplied invaluable insights that significantly influenced Google’s methodology towards problem solving and AI innovation. Nambiar’s team, in particular, focused on enhancing the product’s smart reply feature for Gmail. This utilized the transformers’ abilities to predict and generate responses to emails automatically.
“My role expanded to apply this technology to Google News, aiming to refine the algorithms that connect search queries with the most relevant news articles,” says Nambiar.
The historic transformers initiative carried more than the improvement of user experience. Rather, it advanced the sophistication of ML applications in processing and understanding human language.
“Overall, the ramifications of the advances made in NLP at Google have made a huge impact in the world. I have been very lucky to have a chance to participate in this,” He adds, further emphasizing the momentousness of the endeavor.
Surfing the Social Media Waves
Apart from Nambiar’s initiatives at Google, he has also made far-reaching ripples in the social media sphere.
During his time as a tech lead for Facebook, he developed an ID parsing system for government-issued documents from over 100 countries to enhance Facebook’s user verification.
To achieve his goal, he divided the task into stages: corner identification and cropping, classification, normalization, optical character recognition (OCR), parsing, and post-processing. Collaborating with engineers, he introduced a recurrent neural network-based parser boosting accuracy by 20%, a statistical approach for post-processing enhancing accuracy by 10%, and a gradient descent-based algorithm for normalization-improving speed and accuracy.
These contributions were critical, resulting in the world’s best ID parsing system with over 80% accuracy for all fields and over 95% for critical fields.
Nambiar’s adroitness jumped from Facebook to Instagram for yet another digital breakthrough; this time, for ads.
As part of his work in Instagram Ads, he served as the tech lead for New Surface Optimization, mentoring over five engineers. One of his most innovative projects involved developing real-time intent ads to address the issue of repetitive ads tailored to users’ long-term interests. Recognizing that users might seek products outside their usual preferences, he created a solution anchoring on users’ recently engaged posts and ads. By using collaborative filtering, he identified and boosted ads that other users typically liked. This technique led to over a 1% revenue gain, equating to nearly half a billion dollars. This successful strategy was expanded and implemented across all Instagram surfaces, contributing significantly to incremental revenue gains and being adopted by Facebook Marketplace and Facebook Feed. On top of this, he launched ads for Instagram Reels, generating another half a billion dollars annually.

He is particularly excited about the potential for AI to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from climate change to healthcare disparities. “The possibilities are limitless,” he says. “We are just scratching the surface of what AI can achieve.”
