Tablets in Education: Pros and Cons

Tablets in Education

The future predicted by Ray Bradbury is slowly turning into reality. We no longer need pens and paper to write words: we use digital books to read texts that once were printed. Modern classes remind us of technical laboratories. We are no longer afraid of glimmering screens and click-and-clicking sounds. And why should we if technology makes our lives incredibly easy?

One of the recent innovations, which entered the classroom space, is a tablet. If you ever were in a hurry, doing research for your academic project right at the subway, you know that a good tablet might be a grade saver. You can use it to connect with a professional writing service paper writers, and delegate your assignment to an expert while you are busy with other subjects.

A Device with Maximum Opportunities…

Pro #1: Lean and Mean

A ‘tablet personal computer’ or simply a ‘tablet’ is a screen device with the functions of a traditional computer. Instead of a touchpad or a mouse and a common keyboard, the user has a stylus with on-screen buttons. In short, the main perks are as follows:

  • A great powerhouse. A modern tablet has a superb battery and supports a vast number of applications.
  • Extreme simplicity. No need to care about buying keyboards or a mouse. From now on, you can invest your pocket money into things you love instead of the technology you desperately need for writing academic assignments.
  • Saves money. With no need for additional elements, a tablet is the cheapest alternative for any other screen device.

Pro #2: Light as a Feather

Looking like oversized smartphones, tablets are easy to carry around. They weigh less than a laptop, and with an addition of a separate keyboard, tablets are an awesome alternative to a traditional computer once you need to work on your research paper at the university or the nearest cafe.

The creators of a tablet made it light and compact both in design and usage. The tablet alone will fit into the space of the smallest backpack. Download all books on it, and you no longer need separate pockets for your class readings.

Pro #3: A New Type of Organizer

Ever lost a book or a lecture note? You may stop worrying now. With a modern tablet, one of the most efficient technologies for learning, a student can organize their college life in a simple way. By installing such applications like Dropbox and Skype, you will be able to manage calls from college members without the need to carry a phone or a laptop everywhere you go.

Meanwhile, applications like Dropbox synchronize your classes and deadlines of research projects, so you do not have to worry about missing one.

Pro #4: Write-a-Note Assistant

While typing information on a tablet may be more challenging in terms of time and effort if compared to traditional laptops, using a tablet as a device for making notes is still a great way to enhance one’s education.

If you study art, you know how annoying it is not to see a picture by the artist a professor mentions. Meanwhile, with the use of a tablet, a student can easily peek into a virtual gallery and get back to the lecture in a few seconds.

Pro #5: Supports Platforms and Applications for Studying

A tablet with a high-quality battery provides a student with a wonderful opportunity to study on the go. In a pool of the greatest learning tools online and offline, you can access any education platform or application. Learn Spanish with Duolingo, master business management with Coursera, or boost your coding skills with GitHub.

… And a Few Drawbacks

Gadgets in Education

Con #1: Less Powerful Than Its Siblings

Certainly, tablets cannot fully substitute laptops or computers because the range of the applications they support and the functions they perform is narrower than ones by laptops and computers. For instance, to type the smallest essay fast, you will need to connect a keyboard to a tablet.

Con #2: Like Master Like Device

Naturally, a tablet will stop working. Like any living being or a human-made mechanism, the time will come for you to recycle a tablet and buy a new one. However, the tablet’s ‘lifecycle’ is not shorter than one of the other traditional technologies. In any case, you never lose on a deal.

Con #3: Things Can Get Pricey

Though ranked among the most popular devices for studying in the twenty-first century, a tablet can be a pretty expensive option for some students. Yes, it costs less than a laptop or a traditional computer, but still, not everyone can afford a high-quality tablet. Also, remember that to write an extensive research paper, one will have to buy a separate keyboard for fast typing.

Eventually, the companies will sell new models of a tablet, inspiring consumers to buy more. Just remember that a new model is not always better when it comes to technical characteristics. Always check the difference and set your own priorities.

Con #4: Prone to Breakage

Because tablets are so convenient to carry around, students initially put their ‘little helpers’ into danger. While nail files and other metallic objects cause cracks on the beloved screen, a drop of water makes tablet’s buttons inactive. Additionally, constant shakes and jumps, with a tablet in a backpack, only shorten the working cycle of a device.

Con #5: Low Security

Tablets are expensive and portable, a knowledge that any professional thief or a hacker has. When a tablet with an important essay saved on it can easily disappear, your personal information can be hacked. As a result, tablets require special attention and stronger passwords.

Final Thoughts

Ray Bradbury was right about the future. We still do not know whether the digital word will fully substitute the printed word. What we already know is that a tablet, one of the modern devices, has improved the learning experience. Though some tablets are beyond one’s purse, the majority are still not extremely expensive. Being popular in education, tablets bring one’s studying to a new level. In the end, one’s process of learning is effective and well-organized.
