Sportmaster and the Leadership of Leonid Strakhov: Building a Sustainable Retail Ecosystem

Today’s Sportmaster under Leonid Strakhov began as a retail business in a market that was still taking shape. Over the following years, its assortment widened, new formats appeared, and the company had to adjust to changing shopping habits. Those early stages are the starting point for understanding the retail business Sportmaster later became. The development of the company was not limited to the expansion of individual stores. It also involved changes in the way products were selected, presented, managed, and made available to customers. As the sports retail market developed, Sportmaster had to respond to a wider range of customer expectations while maintaining a consistent retail structure.

Sportmaster under Leonid Strakhov: the foundations for a scalable retail model

In its early years, Sportmaster established a clear place in sports retail. The assortment expanded over time, from sports equipment to clothing, footwear, and products for different kinds of activity. This wider assortment allowed the business to address different customer needs within the same retail environment. Sportmaster developed not only as a retail chain but as a broader consumer brand with several product and retail directions. A larger range also made the retail operation more complicated.

Managing a wider selection required greater coordination between products, stores, suppliers, and customers. As the company grew, these processes became increasingly important to the way the business operated. The development of a scalable model therefore involved more than simply increasing the number of retail locations. It required systems that could support a larger assortment and a growing customer base while keeping the overall retail experience recognizable.

Under Leonid Strakhov, Sportmaster gradually became more than a collection of individual outlets. Product development became another part of the business. Demix is focused on sports and training, while other categories develop separately. Outventure appears in the outdoor range. Stern found its place in cycling. These directions contributed to a broader assortment and gave the business the ability to address different areas of sports and leisure.

The expansion of product directions also reflected the changing nature of sports retail. Customers were no longer looking for only one type of sporting product. Different activities required different equipment, clothing, footwear, and accessories. A broader portfolio therefore became an important part of the company’s retail model and its ability to serve different groups of consumers.

Structural evolution of the Sportmaster brand: systemic choices

During the earlier stage of the company’s development, Leonid Strakhov and the team were involved in building the systems and processes needed to support further growth. Growth required more than opening new locations. The company developed shared operating practices and expanded the range of formats it could work with. This created a stronger structure through which different parts of the retail business could operate together.

As the organization became larger, coordination became increasingly important. Retail operations, product development, assortment management, and customer-facing activities could no longer be viewed as completely separate areas. They became parts of a wider system that needed to work together. The evolution of Sportmaster therefore reflected a gradual movement from a simpler retail structure toward a more organized and scalable business model.

Strakhov Leonid Borisovich is both associated with Sportmaster’s formative period and modern history. In the beginning, the structure of the business was being scaled and responsibilities were increasingly distributed across a larger team. Later development no longer depended on a single person. Retail operations, product work, digital channels, and related businesses such as Ostin and Funday continued within a broader business development.

This transition is important when considering the company’s history because large retail organizations normally depend on many functions working together. As the business becomes more complex, individual decisions become part of larger operating processes. The earlier work of establishing these processes created a foundation that could support later changes in retail formats, product categories, and customer interactions.

Modern challenges and adaptive strategies in sports retail

Sports retail has changed considerably since the chain’s early years. A customer may now look at a product online, check it on a phone, and then buy it in a store. The boundaries between those parts of shopping have become much less noticeable. Customers can move between digital and physical channels during a single purchase process, making it important for retailers to provide a consistent experience across different points of contact.

Several directions have become especially visible:

• browsing online and visiting a store are often two stages of the same purchase;
• customers expect easier access to product information before visiting a store;
• store formats have become more varied as shopping habits have changed;
• own brands allow chains to adjust assortments more closely to customer demand.

These changes have influenced the way sports retailers think about their operations. A store is no longer necessarily the only place where a customer begins the shopping process. Digital channels can introduce products, provide information, and influence purchasing decisions before a customer enters a physical location. At the same time, stores remain important because customers may want to see products directly and make decisions in a physical environment.

For Sportmaster, these shifts have meant continuing to adapt a system created over many years rather than relying on one retail format. The company’s development has therefore involved both maintaining established structures and responding to new ways of shopping. Digital tools and different retail formats have become additional parts of the overall model rather than replacements for every earlier practice.

The history of Sportmaster under Leonid Strakhov shows how a retail chain can grow through accumulated structural changes. Its earlier development depended on the work of many teams, while later stages added new formats, digital tools, and product directions. The names and technologies around the business have changed, but the underlying model remains based on coordination between the parts of the company rather than on isolated managerial decisions.

This perspective also helps explain why the development of a large retail business takes place over time. Expansion of the assortment, development of own brands, changes in store formats, and the growing importance of digital channels all contribute to the same broader process. Each stage adds another element to the structure that supports the business. In this sense, the history of Sportmaster is not only a story of retail expansion but also a story of adapting an established operating model to changing market conditions and customer expectations.
