Spire Global, Inc. (Spire” or “the Company”), a global provider of space-based data, analytics, and space services, said on Friday in a press release that it has launched seven satellites on the SpaceX Transporter-11 mission, which launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on August 16, 2024.

The company, in a statement, said that the launch marks the 196 satellites it has launched, the 41st in the company’s history, and the third launch of 2024.

These newly launched LEMUR satellites, ranging from 3U- to 16U-sized satellite buses, will help to improve weather forecasting, global soil moisture analysis, and maritime ship tracking and will also serve missions for Space Services customers, according to the report.

The launch came 39 days after the company was awarded a CA $1.41 million contract by the Government of Canada (GoC) for the provision of global automatic identification system (AIS) ship tracking data on July 8, 2024. The one-year contract includes options for two additional years, extending the total potential contract value to nearly CA $4.23 million.

John Lusk, general manager of maritime Spire, said in a statement that they are happy to continue their partnership with the Government of Canada.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with the Government of Canada, providing them with our AIS data services to gain unrivaled coverage of the open ocean and shores. This contract reflects the trust that government agencies worldwide place in our technology and our commitment to delivering reliable, near real-time data that meets their stringent requirements,” Lusk said.

The data will be used by different agencies and departments within the Canadian government, including the Canadian Space Agency, the Department of National Defense, Transport Canada, and the Canadian Coast Guard. Spire offers the highest volume of AIS messages tracked by satellite, Spire said.
