Spider Silk Market
Spider silk is a protein fiber that is spun by spiders to make webs to catch prey or as nets to protect their offspring. There are over 50,000 species of spiders that have varied tool kits of task-specific silks with different mechanical properties. Tubiliform silk, aciniform silk, minor-ampullate silk, and major-ampullate (dragline) silk are some types of spider silk that are used either used for web construction, structural support, capturing prey, or protecting egg sacs.
The quality and thickness of silk, however, depend on the type and size of the spider. Most silk types, especially dragline silk, have exceptional mechanical properties of high tensile strength and extensibility. It is one of the suitable alternatives to silkworm silk fibers. However, spider silk extraction and production are difficult and there are inherent problems.
One of the best solutions to this is the production of synthetic spider silk using recombinant techniques. Laboratory-scale production of spider silk is generating a new generation of ecological materials. This silk is widely used in various industrial verticals such as textile, coatings, cosmetics, automotive, healthcare, and defense among others.
Spider silk is gaining popularity in biomedicine and biotechnology applications due to its characteristics such as toughness, elasticity, strength, biocompatibility, and biodegradability.
In addition, there is ongoing research to develop smart wearable fibers using spider silk, scaling up production, reducing production costs, recovering original mechanical strength from the developed fibers, creating artificial spinning processes, and understanding silk genome sequences.
Factors such as rapid advancements in genetic engineering, increasing awareness about plastic waste, rapid adoption of biofabrics, and growing demand for resilient, eco-friendly fibers and biodegradable and biocompatible materials are expected to drive global market revenue growth during the forecast period In addition,
increasing ongoing research on improving recombinant spider silk production and purification methods, rising investments in research and development activities, and a high focus on increasing commercialization of spider silk are expected to drive market growth going ahead.

However, high costs required for manufacturing spider silk, and difficulties in farming spiders for commercial production of fabric due to their cannibalistic and territorial nature, are expected to restrain the growth of the global market during the forecast period. In addition, the silk hardens when overexposed to air making it difficult to work with. This is another factor expected to hamper revenue growth of the market to a certain extent going ahead.
The global spider silk market size reached USD 1.26 Billion in 2021 and is expected to register a revenue CAGR of 19.2% during the forecast period, according to the latest analysis by Emergent Research. Increasing demand for high resilient synthetic fiber and biofabrics is expected to support market revenue growth from 2022-to 2030.
