Reviving a Lost Art Form: An Interview with Ray Corral on His Brand, Mosaicist

Architectural mosaic art has been a long-standing art form practiced since the early days of human civilization. The medium dates back to the ancient Sumerian era, where masterful artisans crafted the world’s most beautiful art pieces with the tools available. These days, the art form seems to have lost some of its prominence due to the prevalence of modern art styles. The beauty of the art form, however, is timeless, and Ray Corral is standing at the forefront of the industry, devoting his life’s work to reviving this long-lost art form through his thriving brand Mosaicist.

We sat down with veteran mosaic artist Ray Corral to talk about his views on all things art and architecture as he tells us the story of how Mosaicist came to be.

TechBullion: How did you start out as a mosaic artist, and what led you to establishing Mosaicist?

Ray: Prior to founding Mosaicist 25 years ago, I began my journey as an artistic designer, laying out mosaic designs for upscale kitchens, wall murals, and entryways. Being an artist all my life, I eventually ran into studies of architectural art and the materials behind its creation. When I discovered my passion for mosaic art, I realized that the high-end finish and the material used to create the artwork made it perfect for holding water. This gave birth to my concept of designing underwater applications for residential and commercial swimming pools with exclusive and charismatic mosaic art.

Q: Through the years, Mosaicist has garnered a reputation for being the best company for unique mosaic designs. What else does your company offer?

Ray: In addition to offering unique mosaic designs, Mosaicist also undertakes design projects on murals for religious interior architecture and government city projects. So far, we have served thousands of clients across the U.S., including in California and New York. We have also completed projects that span across the globe in Russia, London, Cyprus, Switzerland, and throughout the Caribbean.

TechBullion:  We all know that Mosaicist is adept at creating its traditional architectural pool floors, but what is it about your brand that truly stands out among the rest?

Ray: Mosaicist’s personalized service is my company’s bread-and-butter. It allows us to stand above other companies within the industry. As the director behind the company’s escalating growth, I believe in creating unique, exclusive, and one-of-a-kind designs for my clients rather than following a “off the shelf” pattern or design..

TechBullion: How does the creative process usually go?

Ray: First, my team of artists and I visit the client to learn about their design preferences. From their likes and dislikes to their love for a certain kind of architecture, we ensure all this is reflected in the customized design. The process also includes the surrounding landscape of the architecture. After we final render a design that suits all the parameters, it is then sent to the client for approval.

TechBullion: Mosaic Art is an art form that holds so much history. How does Mosaicist preserve this?

Ray: The manufacturing process maintains the use of the old world materials to preserve the authenticity and charm of the Byzantine era, implementing todays modern materials and application to capture longevity and quicker lead times in our industry. We employ expert art installers for every project to ensure each piece of the jigsaw artwork is put together just as if it was made piece by piece on site.

TechBullion: What are the current projects that you have lined up for the future?

Ray: Currently, Mosaicist is focused on designing and installing artwork for swimming pools, while 20% of our other projects involve churches, commercial applications, and city beautification. I want to expand my team and grow the company into the world’s most renowned mosaic artwork provider in the many coming years.

Indeed, Ray Corral has been hard at work highlighting the timeless beauty of mosaic art through Mosaicist. His unflinching vision has allowed his company to thrive, while his more than satisfied customers have lauded his brand for delivering high-quality results without fail. Mosaic Art has steadily been revitalized due to Corral’s efforts, and it’s only a matter of time before this inevitable resurgence bleeds into the modern mainstream art world.
