Retroid Pocket Classic Overview: A Closer Look At Features and Options

Spec sheets read better when you take them one line at a time. The Retroid Pocket Classic Handheld Game Console is described on its product page as a compact Android handheld for portable retro gaming and everyday entertainment, with a vertical design and physical controls. Unlike a lot of the retro handheld game consoles that run a custom Linux menu, this one runs a full mobile operating system, and that choice affects almost everything below. Here is the listing, walked through feature by feature.

The retroid pocket classic comes with 4,000+ preloaded games, according to the product page on the Retro Game Consoles website.

Operating system: Android 14

The page lists Android 14. In practice that means the device behaves like a small phone-style computer built around game controls. If you already know your way around Android settings, the interface will feel familiar. If you prefer a device with a single simple menu and nothing else, it is worth knowing in advance that this is a different kind of experience. The listing also describes it as suitable for everyday entertainment, not just retro games, which fits the idea of a general-purpose Android system.

Display: 3.92-inch AMOLED touchscreen

The screen is the headline feature. The page gives a 3.92-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 1240 x 1080, and a brightness of up to about 500 nits. AMOLED panels are known for strong contrast, and the touch support lets you tap through menus the way you would on a phone. The listing confirms the touchscreen explicitly, so you can use it alongside the physical controls instead of choosing one or the other.

Processor, graphics and memory

Under the hood, the listing names a G1 Gen2 processor with an 8-core Kryo CPU, split into 2 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores. Graphics are listed as an Adreno A12. The page does not provide benchmark results or a list of what runs at what speed, so it would be wrong to promise specific performance from the numbers alone. What the configuration does tell you is that the device is built on a modern mobile chip design with a mix of core types, which is typical of Android hardware.

The listing pairs the AMOLED display with physical controls.

Memory and storage choices

Memory is listed as 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4X, with speeds up to 2133MHz. The page presents these as options, so check which variant you are choosing. Storage works as a bundle: the options show a version with 64GB and a version with 128GB, though the 128GB bundle is marked unavailable on the page. The listing mentions 4000+ preloaded games, and as with any preloaded count it is worth reading the option labels before ordering, since that number is tied to the package.

Wireless, battery and choosing a color

For connectivity the listing gives Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. Those are the wireless basics for downloading apps, updating the system and pairing accessories such as headphones. The battery is a 5000mAh unit. The page does not state a play-time estimate, so avoid assuming a specific number of hours.

Color might be the most personal choice. The page lists Berry, PKM Yellow, Classic 6 SG, Kiwi, Teal, Classic 6, Retro and Atomic Purple. Several of those names reference classic console palettes, which is a nice nod for people who enjoy that history.

Color options include Berry, Kiwi, Teal and Atomic Purple, among others.

Who the spec sheet points to

Read as a whole, the listing describes a handheld for someone who wants a bright touchscreen, a modern Android system, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a compact vertical shape. It is a different proposition from the simple plug-and-play devices that run Linux. Neither type is better in general; it depends on whether you want a flexible mobile platform or a minimal one.

When you are ready to compare, keep the product page open and tick off each line above against your own needs. If you want legitimate retro handhelds from a specialist seller, the Retro Game Consoles store is the best store to shop, with each product laid out in detail.
