Pakistan’s journey toward becoming a digitally connected nation is gaining momentum through meaningful collaborations that combine modern education, technology, innovation and financial empowerment. While digital transformation is often associated with major cities, the future of Digital Pakistan also depends on empowering rural communities with knowledge, digital skills and access to modern digital financial services. A remarkable example of this vision is the strategic collaboration between Potohar University Gujar Khan and Digital Village Bhata, the first Digital village in the Rawalpindi Division selected under the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Rawalpindi initiative for digitally enabled villages.
This partnership represents a shared commitment to preparing young people for the future through quality education, technological advancement, research, AI, Robotics, entrepreneurship and financial education. By bringing together an emerging centre of higher education and a pioneering digitally enabled rural community, the collaboration supports the national vision of building a digitally empowered and financially inclusive Pakistan.
Potohar University: Transforming Higher Education in the Potohar Region At the heart of this collaboration is Potohar University Gujar Khan an institution established with the vision of delivering world class education to the youth of the Potohar region. The university is committed to producing graduates equipped with practical knowledge, leadership qualities and future ready skills required in today’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
Unlike traditional educational institutions, the Potohar University is developing an ecosystem where education, innovation, research and industry collaboration work together. The university aims to prepare students not only for employment but also for entrepreneurship, technological innovation and global competitiveness.
Its modern campus reflects this vision through smart classrooms, advanced computer laboratories, AI and Robotics laboratories, science and engineering labs, research centres, innovation and incubation facilities, seminar and conference halls, media and podcast studios, technology park, internship centre, multipurpose auditorium, reading and study areas, indoor sports facilities, cafeteria, centralized air conditioning, automated elevator systems, CCTV Surveilliance and modern fire safety infrastructure.
These facilities create an environment where students can develop both academic excellence and practical experience while preparing for careers in emerging technologies and the knowledge economy.
The Visionary Leadership of Tariq Sharif Bhatti Behind the establishment of Potohar University stands the inspiring journey of Chairman Tariq Sharif Bhatti, whose life reflects determination, resilience and a deep commitment to his homeland.
At the age of twenty, Tariq Sharif left Gujar Khan for Europe in search of better opportunities. Started from Zero, he gradually built successful businesses across Italy, France, Mauritius and other European countries through dedication and hard work.
Despite decades of international success, his connection with Gujar Khan, Potohar and Pakistan remained unwavering. After nearly fifty years abroad, he chose to return and invest in the future of his own people rather than simply enjoying retirement overseas.
His dream was to establish an institution that would allow talented students from Gujar Khan and surrounding rural areas to receive international standard education close to home. Today, Potohar University stands as the realization of that vision and reflects his belief that education is the most powerful investment in a nation’s future.
During his meeting with the delegation from Digital Village Bhata, Tariq Sharif Bhatti highlighted Bhata’s proud educational heritage, describing it as a village known for producing educated families, teachers, professionals, military officers and overseas Pakistanis for more than a century. He further expressed that Potohar University is the university of the youth of Bhata and announced that eligible students from the Digital Village Bhata would receive special consideration as regular academic activities expand.
State Bank of Pakistan’s Vision for Digitally Enabled Villages
The State Bank of Pakistan has been playing a leading role in promoting financial inclusion and digital banking across the country. Through its vision of Digitally Enabled Villages, the central bank seeks to ensure that rural communities benefit from secure digital financial services, financial education and modern banking technologies.
Under this initiative, SBP Rawalpindi selected Village Bhata as the first digitally enabled village in the Rawalpindi Division. The project encourages citizens to adopt mobile banking, QR code payments, digital wallets, online banking, debit cards, merchant digitalization, and electronic financial services while reducing dependence on cash transactions.
The broader objective is to strengthen financial literacy, improve access to formal banking, empower women and youth, encourage entrepreneurship and promote a Cashless Economy that supports sustainable economic development.
Digital Village Bhata: A Model for Rural Digital Transformation
Located in Gujar Khan, Digital Village Bhata has become a model for community led digital transformation. Under the leadership of Khawar Saeed Janjua, the initiative has actively promoted digital awareness, financial literacy, merchant onboarding, digital banking and community engagement.
The village has demonstrated how collaboration between government institutions, financial organizations, educational institutions, local businesses and community elders can accelerate digital adoption in rural Pakistan. Through awareness campaigns and financial education activities, residents are increasingly embracing digital payment solutions and modern banking practices, supporting the State Bank’s vision of greater financial inclusion.
A Partnership Built for the Future
The meeting between Potohar University and the Digital Village Bhata delegation marked the beginning of a partnership focused on education, innovation, and community development. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together to empower young people through digital skills, higher education, research, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies (especially AI, Robotics, CyberSecurity and Financial Technologies).
During the visit, Dr. Ahmad Durrani conducted a comprehensive tour of the university campus. The visit highlighted the university’s commitment to creating a modern learning environment that meets international standards.
The collaboration also reflects a shared understanding that universities must extend their impact beyond campus boundaries by supporting surrounding communities and contributing to regional development.
Building the Future of Digital Pakistan
The partnership between Potohar University Gujar Khan and Digital Village Bhata represents a practical example of how an Modern Educational Institute and Digitally Enabled, Financially Educated Community of a Village can work together to support Pakistan’s digital future. By combining academic excellence with community engagement, the collaboration will help students to develop skills for brighter future.
The initiative also complements the vision of the Prime Minister’s Digital Pakistan Programme and the State Bank of Pakistan’s Digitally Enabled Villages Programme, creating opportunities for students and local communities to become active participants in a modern digital economy.
As Potohar University continues to expand its academic excellence and Digital Village Bhata strengthens its role as a model rural digital community, this partnership has the potential to become a benchmark for similar collaborations across Pakistan. Together, they are laying the foundation for greater financial inclusion, digital innovation, technology driven education and a Cashless Pakistan, ensuring that the youth of Gujar Khan and the wider Potohar region are prepared to lead Pakistan’s next chapter of digital transformation.
