Oak City Remodeling LLC Founder, Will Armstrong, Reveals Best Practices for Dealing With Contractors.

Will Armstrong aims to educate homeowners on best practices for dealing with contractors.

When it comes to hiring a contractor to take on a project, the average homeowner can face a lot of potential issues. Finding a good contractor in itself can take a lot of time and effort. One wrong move and the homeowner could face significant financial loss, a poor quality product, property damage, partially completed work, and unnecessary stress. Armstrong mentions that “it’s unfortunate, but bad contractors are way too common in this industry, and cleaning up their messes is something we are called to do all the time.”

Fortunately, Armstrong has shared some key insights on how to best deal with contractors for the next home repair or remodel project.

Will Armstrong is the owner of Oak City Remodeling LLC, a licensed general contracting company located in Raleigh/Cary, North Carolina. Will has been operating in this industry for many years. As an industry expert, he aims to educate homeowners on best practices for dealing with contractors.

Armstrong was a project manager for a Fortune 500 homebuilder. However, he had the latent desire to start his own business. He combined his years of working and studying to achieve success in his business and the knowledge and passion he has for the industry. As a result, his company is built around high-quality workmanship, honesty, integrity, and communication. His goal is to provide an excellent customer experience from start to finish.

As a reputable contracting company in this area, Will is all too familiar with fixing the work done by previous contractors hired by the customers. His team has heard horror stories about the terrible experiences their customers have had with prior contractors. Armstrong’s goal is to put an end to these terrible customer experiences by educating homeowners on how to safely deal with contractors.

According to Armstrong, here are some of the best practices that every homeowner should follow:

  • Free Estimates: Look for contractors who provide free estimates and who are willing to take the time to look at the job in person.
  • Portfolio: Ask the contractor to share their website, pictures of any recent work, reviews, and referrals.
  • License: If the project requires a permit or is valued at $30,000 or more, the contractor must hold a general contractor’s license (One can search online to verify and confirm it’s in good standing).
  • Insurance: The contractor should provide proof of general liability insurance and worker’s comp insurance (if they have 3 or more full-time employees).
  • Bonding: Check to see if the contractor is bonded. Although not always necessary, it’s nice to have.
  • Communication: Look for a contractor who is a great communicator and who is professional and organized from the start.
  • Payments: Be weary of high down payments and try to only pay upon completion. If the contractor states it is for material, one can offer to purchase the material for them prior to the start of the job.
  • Records: Keep records of all receipts and payments made to the contractor.
  • Warranty: Look for contractors who have a warranty process in place for their work.
  • Reviews: Search online for customer complaints and check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against them.

Armstrong states that “There are several more suggestions that I am more than happy to share. At the end of the day though, it’s just important to be cautious and practice due diligence when dealing with new contractors.  I truly love what I do, so if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch through our website”.
