Medical Studies: Preparatory Courses for Entrance Exams

Medical Studies

Anyone who would like to prepare for the selection process for studying medicine or training in the medical field can register now until July 17th.

The aim of the preparatory courses is to prepare prospective students as best as possible for the entrance exams that the American universities require for medical studies and for training in various health professions. The preparatory courses are organized by the Study Information Service of the State Department for Educational Support in cooperation with the Association. You can also check out details about medicine interview tutors here.

The preparatory courses are aimed at two different training paths at American universities, each of which provides for an entrance examination: Firstly, there is a preparatory course in a foreign language, in which university lecturers and tutors prepare prospective medical students for the entrance examination for medical studies. The second preparatory course is aimed at all those who want to prepare as well as possible for the admission hurdle for medical professions.

Subject areas to focus

The preparatory course for the entrance exam for medical studies starts on July 27th, 2022, and lasts 13 days: The first six days of the course are intended to refresh the knowledge of the participants in the subject’s chemistry, biology, anatomy, mathematics, physics, and logic: Five more course days include a practical part to prepare for the admissions process. The remaining two days are used for the test simulation. For participants from South Tyrol, the course fee is 160 dollars. Those participants who do not live in South Tyrol pay 450 dollars or can opt for the course offered in Bloomington.

On the other hand, on July 23, 2022, the preparatory courses will begin for all those who want to train at the American university in a health profession – for example, training to become a nurse, physiotherapist, or midwifery. The courses last six days and are reserved for those interested who are based in South Tyrol. The course fee is 90 dollars. Four days are used to refresh the subjects; chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, and logic, while two days are used for repetition and test simulation. The number of participants is limited. The offer is also aimed at those who want to complete their training in Health Professions.

Is it difficult to get into medical school as a doctor?

If you haven’t started to understand chemistry and biology by the time of admission, don’t even try. It is better to postpone until next year and this time devote yourself to the study of the main disciplines of medicine.

To become a doctor, you need to be able to remember a large amount of information. If you have a bad memory, you have to train it beforehand, otherwise, you just can’t cope with the flow of information that is thrown out at university.

High scores on the exam do not guarantee admission. In budget education, in addition to the results of a single exam, diplomas, awards for participation in Olympiads, competitions, and conferences are taken into account.

Colleges are also impressed by students with applicants with active lifestyles, and achievements in sports or social activities.

If the student and his family are in a difficult financial situation, proof must be provided. The university administration can help.

Is it possible to study medicine without good preparation? Hardly. Will it be possible to pass the competition without an exam? No. To learn, work on yourself, and overcome all difficulties.

If active preparation is always hampered by schoolwork (abstracts, controls, reports), you can always count on the help of the Student Association. With them, you at least have a chance to approach the recording without nervous exhaustion.

Finally in the clinic – 7th semester

It’s finally getting clinical! I can only really say that now. And that, although I’ve already arrived in the seventh semester. In the pre-clinic, we were first taught important basics. Anatomy, biochemistry, or physiology was on the agenda. All this served to prepare for the clinic. This is the only way to understand the clinical subjects in depth. But the fifth and sixth semesters were also more basic-oriented. In microbiology, virology, or pharmacology you get an idea of what to expect in the following semesters. And now, the seventh semester is behind me. And “typical” clinical subjects were on the schedule for the first time. We learned about the most important clinical pictures, diagnostics, and therapy.

But what exactly awaits you in the seventh semester? What is the best way to approach each subject? And how was the whole thing implemented in the times of Corona? In the following, you can read my review of the past semester.

Dealing with online teaching

The pandemic is already overshadowing the fourth semester in a row. Part of everyday university life continues to take place in front of the screen. In some subjects, better and in others worse concepts were found for teaching the teaching content digitally. Overall, the university always made an effort to offer us, students, acceptable alternatives. Over time, the trend to return to face-to-face teaching became apparent. Some seminars or lectures were held for the first time, again exclusively in attendance. Others, on the other hand, were still only uploaded with audio. Still, others were offered in a hybrid format. In the coming summer semester, there should even be a completely normal operation again.

How do students feel about this?

Personally, I really enjoy the freedom gained through online teaching. I particularly like the flexibility in terms of time and location that I have gained. You can also work at your own pace. And other learning sources can also be included much more easily at the same time. In my opinion, this only applies to lectures. No screen format in the world can replace direct patient contact.

What do I wish for the future semesters? For me, a hybrid format would be ideal. What does that mean? This means that lectures would be held live again, but at the same time the course would be digitally transmitted and recorded. On the one hand, the loud calls for face-to-face teaching from some students would be answered. On the other hand, people like me could continue to enjoy the benefits of online teaching.

And what was actually on the plan for the seventh semester? How important are the individual lectures? And how do you best prepare for the exams?
