John Williams of Elevate on Why Clarity, Not Confidence, Drives High Performance

John Williams has spent more than three decades helping elite athletes, business leaders and organisations unlock higher levels of performance. As Founder and Chief Clarity Coach at Elevate With John, he has developed a systems-based approach centred on one core principle: clarity comes before confidence. His work spans executive coaching, leadership development, organisational consulting and high-performance sport, with clients ranging from Fortune 500 executives to Grand Slam champions and military special operations personnel.

In this interview, Williams discusses the performance challenges facing today’s leaders, why clarity has become a competitive advantage in an increasingly complex world, how artificial intelligence is changing the coaching landscape, and the lessons he has learned from building a business focused on sustainable excellence.

Can you tell us about your background and what led you to start Elevate With John?

My career has been driven by one question: What separates those who consistently perform at the highest level from those who never quite reach their potential? For more than three decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with Olympians, world champions, Grand Slam champions, executives, military special operations personnel, law enforcement leaders, and organizations around the world. What I discovered is that sustained success is rarely about talent alone. It’s about clarity, standards, systems, and the discipline to execute consistently.

That realization became the foundation for Elevate With John. I wanted to create a company that moved beyond motivation and focused on measurable performance improvement. Too many people are chasing confidence when what they really need is clarity. Confidence is often the byproduct of having a repeatable system that works.

Elevate With John exists to help individuals and organizations close the gap between where they are today and what they’re truly capable of becoming. My mission isn’t to inspire people for a day, it’s to help them build the mindset, leadership, and performance systems that create results they can sustain for a lifetime.

What does Elevate With John do, and who do you help?

Elevate With John is a leadership and performance development company that helps individuals, teams, and organizations maximize human potential through clarity-driven performance systems. We work with professional athletes, executives, business owners, coaches, educators, healthcare professionals, and organizations that understand success is ultimately built on people.

Our work combines leadership development, executive coaching services, performance consulting, organizational culture, and elite sport performance into one integrated approach. Whether I’m working with a Fortune 500 executive or a professional athlete preparing for a Grand Slam, the objective is remarkably similar: create clarity, eliminate unnecessary complexity, build repeatable systems, and execute consistently under pressure.

What makes our clients unique is that they’re not looking for shortcuts. They’re looking for sustainable excellence. We help them improve decision-making, communication, accountability, resilience, leadership effectiveness, and ultimately results.

Our belief is simple: every individual and every organization already possesses far more potential than they consistently demonstrate. Our job is to help them uncover it, organize it, and perform at a level that becomes undeniable.

What problem in the market are you solving?

One of the biggest problems I see today is that people are overwhelmed with information but under-equipped with clarity. There is no shortage of advice, books, podcasts, courses, or motivational content. Yet performance isn’t improving at the same pace because information alone rarely changes behavior.

Organizations often invest heavily in training while overlooking the systems required to sustain implementation. Individuals chase confidence, motivation, and quick fixes instead of building the habits, standards, and accountability structures that consistently produce results.

That’s the gap we’re solving.

Our work focuses on simplifying complexity. We help people identify what truly matters, eliminate distractions, establish meaningful standards, and execute with intention. Rather than asking people to do more, we often help them do less, but do it exceptionally well.

High performance isn’t about operating at maximum intensity every day. It’s about consistently making better decisions. When clarity improves, execution improves. When execution improves, confidence follows naturally. That’s the cycle we help our clients create, and it’s why our work produces lasting results rather than temporary inspiration.

What makes your approach different?

Our philosophy begins with one belief: clarity precedes confidence.

Many coaches and consultants focus on motivation or accountability. Those things certainly matter, but they’re rarely enough on their own. I focus first on helping people understand reality with complete honesty. Without an accurate understanding of where you are today, it’s impossible to build an effective plan for tomorrow.

Everything we do is system-based. Whether we’re improving leadership, athletic performance, business execution, or organizational culture, we identify repeatable behaviors that produce predictable outcomes.

Another difference is that I don’t separate technical performance from personal development. Leadership influences communication. Communication influences relationships. Relationships influence culture. Culture influences performance. Everything is connected.

Finally, I believe standards outperform goals. Goals define destinations. Standards define daily behavior. When standards improve consistently, goals become a natural consequence rather than something you constantly chase.

Our clients don’t simply leave with ideas. They leave with practical frameworks they can apply every day to improve performance long after our engagement ends.

What trends are you seeing in your industry right now?

One of the most encouraging trends is that organizations are finally recognizing that performance and well-being are not competing priorities, they’re complementary. Sustainable success requires both.

At the same time, we’re seeing an increasing demand for measurable outcomes. Companies are no longer satisfied with inspirational keynote speeches or generic leadership programs. They want practical systems that improve communication, accountability, decision-making, retention, and organizational culture.

Another important shift is the growing recognition that technical expertise alone doesn’t create effective leaders. Emotional intelligence, adaptability, resilience, and the ability to lead through uncertainty have become essential competencies.

I also see a growing appreciation for individualized coaching. Cookie-cutter solutions rarely work because every organization has unique challenges, values, and cultures.

Perhaps the biggest opportunity is helping people simplify. In a world that constantly encourages more information, more technology, and more complexity, organizations that develop clarity, focus, and disciplined execution will continue separating themselves from their competition.

How are technology, AI, customer expectations, or market changes shaping your sector?

Artificial intelligence is transforming almost every profession, and performance coaching is no exception. AI can dramatically improve access to information, automate repetitive tasks, accelerate analysis, and personalize learning experiences. Those are extraordinary opportunities.

However, AI doesn’t replace judgment, leadership, trust, or human connection. It enhances them when used thoughtfully.

I believe the future belongs to professionals who know how to combine advanced technology with authentic human leadership. Information is becoming increasingly abundant. Wisdom remains scarce.

Customer expectations are also changing. People expect faster access, personalized experiences, measurable outcomes, and greater transparency. That raises the standard for everyone in our profession.

Rather than viewing AI as competition, I see it as a powerful partner. It allows us to spend less time gathering information and more time helping clients make better decisions.

Technology will continue changing how we work. It will never eliminate the importance of empathy, accountability, communication, and leadership. Those human qualities will become even more valuable as technology continues to advance.

What has been one of the biggest lessons from building and leading the business?

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that leadership begins with self-leadership. Before you can influence others effectively, you must first develop the discipline to lead yourself consistently.

I’ve also learned that sustainable success is built far more through patience than speed. We often celebrate rapid growth, but meaningful organizations are usually constructed one relationship, one decision, and one standard at a time.

Another lesson is that clarity requires courage. Leaders frequently avoid difficult conversations because they fear conflict or discomfort. Yet avoiding those conversations usually creates larger problems later.

I’ve also become increasingly convinced that culture is created by what leaders consistently tolerate, not what they occasionally say.

Ultimately, my responsibility isn’t simply to help clients solve today’s challenges. It’s to equip them with frameworks that allow them to solve tomorrow’s challenges independently. That’s how you create real impact.

Success isn’t measured by how much people need you. It’s measured by how capable they become because of you.

What’s next for Elevate With John?

We’re entering an exciting period of growth.

Our vision is to become one of the leading global resources for leadership development, human performance, and organizational transformation. That includes expanding our executive coaching programs, launching additional digital education platforms, growing our speaking engagements internationally, and partnering with organizations committed to developing exceptional leaders.

We’re also expanding our thought leadership through The UNDENIABLE Podcast, online education, books, workshops, and performance frameworks that make elite coaching principles accessible to a much broader audience.

One of my long-term goals is to create a comprehensive ecosystem where individuals can access coaching, leadership development, organizational consulting, and performance education through one integrated platform.

Most importantly, our mission remains unchanged. We exist to help people perform at the level they’re truly capable of. Talent may open doors, but clarity, standards, and disciplined execution determine how far you ultimately go.

That’s the future we’re building, one leader, one team, and one organization at a time.
