Safe driving habits should matter more than insurance premiums
IRVINE, Calif.—July 22, 2026—The makers of the iSharing app, a real-time GPS phone tracker designed for family safety and location sharing, today shared guidance for parents of teenaged drivers during the summer season—a time of year when teen driver crash rates spike. While industry data reveals that parents are primarily concerned with the high cost of insuring teen drivers, iSharing suggests that a focus on safe driving habits would be more beneficial to everyone involved.
The 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are among the deadliest days of the year for teen drivers. Deadly crashes involving teen drivers run about 30% higher during this period. In 2023 alone, for example, 2,897 people died in teen-driver-involved crashes, 860 of them during the “100 Deadliest Days.”
At the same time, according to a reader poll from CarInsurance.com, 57.3% of parents say cost increase is their primary concern when adding a teen to car insurance, versus 42.3% who say that teaching good driving habits is their primary concern.
“We get that insurance for teen drivers can be costly,” said a spokesperson for iSharing. “However, in our view, a focus on safety would be better for the driver, the family, and anyone they’re sharing the road with.”
Cost is certainly an issue. The average full coverage cost for a 16-year-old on a parent’s policy was $5,740 per year as of late 2025. This is up around $700 since 2023. In fact, adding a teen driver costs more on average than adding a driver with a speeding ticket, at-fault accident, or DUI. “Safety should still matter more,” the spokesperson added.
Parents can take action on this front, using real driving data, e.g., speeding, phone use, and hard braking to help their kids become safer drivers. iSharing’s Driving Report feature enables this capability.
The app reviews driving data from the past 365 days, trip by trip. It reports:
- Max Speed: the highest speed reached during each trip
- High Speed: distance traveled over 80 mph /130 km/h — this is a danger threshold, not a comparison to the local posted speed limit
- Phone Usage: detected when the driver interacts with the phone while the car is moving
- Hard Braking: a speed decrease of more than 7 mph per second (not counted below 15 mph)
- Rapid Acceleration: a speed increase of more than 8 mph per second (not counted below 15 mph)
