How to Transfer Large Files?

Transfer Large Files

It can be daunting when you complete preparing your documents and want to transfer the files but when you click the send icon, the files are not delivered to the person that you want to send to. Our emailing platforms which are the most common ways to send files are sometimes not able to help us share large files. Large files also have the potential to take up a lot of our storage space especially if they are sitting on the sent folder.

There are simple ways to send large videos and any other larger files that you may want to share with your colleagues. Below are the most efficient methods of transferring large files:

File compression method

There are many file compression software that you can use to squash large or multiple files. Most of this software is mostly open access and includes 7-Zip, WinZip, WinRAR, PeaZip as well as Zipware and Hamster Zip Archiver. They are all easy to use and compress files instantly. The advantages of using file compression software include:

  • Enhanced transfer speed
  • Reduced hardware storage
  • Software is not byte dependent
  • Easier to access, write and read
  • Readily available for various devices including Mac, Linux, and Windows

Use of a USB drive

When you have a large video, you may want to use a USB drive instead. There are various ways to transfer files to a removable disk. You could either copy/paste using a mouse or keyboard shortcut, drag and drop the file, or use the option “send to”. All of these actions will work to transfer large video files to the flash disk which can in turn be copied by other people. A USB drive is convenient because it can transfer up to 1 terabyte-sized file. Suppose you are working in a team, it makes it easy to transfer those huge videos among team members one after the other. The other advantage of utilizing this method is that it enables you to free space from your computer because you can have documents saved on the disk.

 Utilize cloud storage

This is an offsite storage platform that is maintained by a third party. Among the cloud storage spaces that you can use include Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, as well as Amazon Cloud Drive and IDrive. Some of these cloud storage spaces can only be used based on the email provider that you use. For instance, people who use Gmail have automatic access to Google Drive while those who use OneDrive can use Outlook.com. The advantage of using cloud storage is that you can store up to 30 terabytes of data.

User Datagram Protocol (UDP)

The use of UDP is one of the most efficient ways to transfer large videos without compromising their quality. UDP solutions work in two ways. You can either send documents directly to your intended audience or upload it on the cloud for them to view and download. UDP is hosted by File Catalyst, Aspera, and Signiant. This solution works by creating a path on the internet then transferring data at high speeds. When both the sender and the receiver have the software on their end, UDP can override whatever hurdles that may be on the internet.

MASV

If you want to send large files without restrictions and at a faster rate, this option is for you. It works best for video editors who deal with large files. So long as your internet connection is stable, MASV will transfer files promptly to your desired audience. The advantage of this amplified cloud solution is that it does not require software of any kind to transfer the files. You can also send as many documents as you may want without experiencing any bandwidth roadblocks. This platform is affordable, easy to use, and effortless to manage.

Final thoughts

It does not matter what method you are using, the transfer of files is simple. You only require to save the file on cloud space and then send them to other people when you want. You can also save them on your computer in case you are using hardware devices to move files. For best outcomes, you must let the receiver know via email or phone call that you have shared a file with them so that they access it. Some applications such as Gmail are integrated with file transfer solutions that make it easy to send large files. Once received by the intended person, they can either view the files online or download them to their devices.
