Software

How Assembly is Disrupting the Productivity Software Market with Jonathan Fields and Josh Purvis, CO-Founders of Assembly.

COVID-19 has led businesses to adopt permanent hybrid or remote work models, and now they’re on a software buying spree to fill gaps, virtualizing formerly in-office processes. This has exacerbated an existing three-fold problem that businesses have had with productivity software.

First, what businesses need from productivity platforms has fundamentally changed with COVID because silos have become more siloed. As businesses add more tools to their already-present suite, employees experience more tool fatigue. And ultimately, these platforms also silo the data they collect, which means they miss out on valuable cross-department analytics-driven insights.

These mounting challenges are what led two of ZipRecruiter’s earliest employees — Jonathan Fields and Josh Purvis — to launch Assembly, alongside Vijay Kumar and Muthu Rajendranrg, a digital HQ that offers customizable workflows and employee engagement solutions.

Assembly is best described as an all in one performance management, employee engagement, productivity, and rewards platform. Assembly looks to empower individuals, team leads, managers and executives on their journey to optimize their day and make work more meaningful.

But great software has often been hindered by hurdles to user adoption. Purvis and Fields knew that a pivotal point of Assembly’s success was adoption, so they made customizable resources the crux of their platform.  Assembly enables organizations to empower their employees. Flexibility, they learned, offers the authority, opportunity, and motivation that workforces need to do their best work and achieve more.

The next essential ingredient was closing gaps between roles and departments — a problem they’d both experienced in former jobs, where massive tool fragmentation led to information and accountability loss, context shifting, and disengagement.

“In one role in particular, I’d just started and it was my day one. I received this long email from HR of tools I needed to create accounts for and get setup,” Purvis said. “But there were permission issues, security blocks, seat restrictions…it took me over two weeks and lots of wasted time for me, IT, and HR,  just to get just the 20-plus tools I needed up and running.”

These issues were easier to fix when everyone was in the office, but COVID changed that. And not just proximity to IT, but what employees needed in general to be happy.

“There is a shift that has been happening for a while. Investment banks and consulting firms are losing talent to technology companies, tech companies are losing talent to entrepreneurship and brick and mortar businesses can get off the ground faster with no physical presence,” Fields said.

The shift yielded a need beyond employee happiness, or rather, linked engagement to accessibility. That’s when Assembly launched Flows, their set of more than 50 cross-department customizable productivity templates.

“Most apps/services are just some stacked version of inputs (lego pieces) – a doc, a spreadsheet, a form – just inputs,” Purvis said. “We let our customers stack inputs (what we call blocks) that can be customized and ordered however the builder needs. The benefit is that a business might come to Assembly with one solution but as that business evolves, new needs might arise and there’s a good chance that Assembly can solve their need. We can future-proof an organization’s need to buy new niche tools and continue to improve our product quickly in areas we can’t support.”

At the heart of the ability to do this is a no-code approach, which offers customers flexibility and control not found in so many productivity platforms to date.

Any person without any technical background can drag and drop images and content and build a successful website,” Fields said. “Assembly is the same for engagement in the workplace. Team leads, managers and leadership can drag and drop build out an experience that is custom tailed and engaging to their specific use case.”
