Henequen fibre is derived from the Agave fourcroydes plant’s leaves. Henequen is a plant in the asparagus family that is also known as Cuban sisal or Yucatan sisal. Henequen is primarily used in the production of ropes and twines for applications such as agriculture and shipping. Agaves are primarily grown in eastern Mexico, with large areas of cultivation in Yucatan, southern Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. Henequen fibres are also used to make Licor del Henequen, a traditional Mexican alcoholic drink.
A rosette of sword-shaped leaves rises from a thick stem to form the agave plant. The leaves have teeth that are 3–6 mm long and a spine that is 2–3 cm long. From the fifth to the sixteenth year after planting, Henequen plants produce about 25 leaves per year. Because of its durability, strength, stretching ability, affinity for certain dyestuffs, and resistance to deterioration in saltwater, henequen has traditionally been the preferred material for agricultural twine. The Market Survey examines the Global Henequen Market Sales for the forecast period 2021- 2031. Henequen has been used to replace fiberglass fabrics and asbestos as a strengthening material.
